Anybody know what kind of spider this is... We live in east texas and it's bigger than what I've seen around here before. Gray and hairy. It was sitting on the wall in my hallway when I got up this morning. Glad I saw it before all the girls! That's be bad...

Thanks, guys. I haven't seen one of these around here but apparently they're very common. It sure catches your eye at 4am on your hallway wall - about 4 to 5 inches.

Yes, they are very common. When I lived in Tulsa, they were everywhere! One time, I was getting out of the shower, grabbed the towel, and a wolf spider fell off of it, onto the floor. It was about 5 times the size of the one you have there.

That's a heck of a story. Did you have to get back in the shower to clean off?

Wolf spiders are common here in Florida. I welcome them in my house, they do not spin webs, they chase insects down, thus they are very fast. Sometimes they even become like pets. I have one somewhere in my house that spreads as large as an adults hand but he runs and hides as soon as he sees me. I have heard they do not or cannot bite, but they sure can scare the crap out of you because of their size and speed.
Called Wolf Spider because they hunt and track down their prey like a wolf.

Oh yeah, the spider in the opening thread,

Someone heard wrong, apparently. We have them here as well.

the bite of the Wolf Spider is poisonous but not lethal. Although non-aggressive, they bite freely if provoked and should be considered dangerous to humans. The bite may be very painful. First aid and medical attention should be sought as soon as possible, particularly as to children or the elderly.

Nah, I admit that it startled me. But, I have always liked spiders, especially cute little furry ones.

I was also bitten by a Brown Recluse in Tulsa. That sucked The doctor had to remove a small necrotic lesion where the spider bit me.

Still, I have been in Florida for 40 plus years and they are plentiful here and I don't know of any one who was knowingly been bitten by a Wolf spider. If you see one, wave your hand and he is gone in a flash. Corner one and try to pick it up (you would have to be fast) and it will defend itself and can bite, nonlethal. I did look it up after my previous post, but I still will let one or two live in my house, which has been bug free for over a year without any spraying. Is it due to my 'pet' wolf spider ?? I don't know but I would like to think so.
Now the Brown Recluse as pointed out by 1stPlace, it may be nonlethal but the wound it leaves from it's poison is dangerous and can be very problematic if untreated. Hopefully the Wolf spider will kill the recluse, I hope.

This is what a brown recluse can do to you if not caught early.

If I thought you weren't my friend...I just don't think I could bear it.

OK, I just had to get a visual representation of that "spider story"

Using photoshop, I took the pencil in the picture above, and resized it to be 20% it's original size. (It was that, or enlarge the spider to 500%.)

I inserted a ruler into the picture, and adjusted it to the scale of the pencil. Pencil's are about 1/4" wide.

Anyways, here is what I came up with.

I kinda regret killin it but I've got little kids in the house and am always worried about them. Usually I just try and get them (the spiders) outside. I've taught the kids to be aware of spiders, stay away from them, don't play with them... but spiders are good cause they eat all those bugs were always trying to get rid of - so don't kill them unless you have to.

Good looking spider, though. Better looking out of the house.

With over a hundred species of Wolf spiders in this country, I assure you, it was a wolf.

Yes, but not in North America, not anywhere, really.
The picture you just posted in your previous post, is about as large as they come, the largest of the species.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the largest in north America has a body of about an inch long, and a 3 inch diameter spread.

The spider I photoshopped has a body of about 3 1/2 inches long, with legs probably equally as long. There just arent any wolf spiders that big, anywhere.
If there is, you need to catch it and get it to a taxidermist!
