i noticed in the manual that is states if running a 9256 you need to change the MHZ setting on the gyro. Does this need to be changed or can you run the servo on the factory setting with the Gyro?

you have to change it to match the pulse rate of the servo you are using. Spartan RC has the directions in the manual as to what setting it needs to be on for the 9256 pulse rate. You can change it either with the flashlink or through the blinking lights. Just follow the step by step directions in the manual. And don't plug in the tail servo until you make the changes in the gyro.
