I have tested many blades over the past 10 years or so, and I have discovered that just as there are bad, good, better and best in composite blades, so are their in wood blades.
In fact, my tests have proven to me, that some of the good wood blades are even better then some of the bad composite ones.
I have even tested some good wood blades with PROPERLY ATTACHED blade roots, at head speeds of 1900, and they flew very well and held together very well. But of course, even the best wood blade will come apart, if the blade roots are not properly attached.
On the other hand, I have also tested some composite blades that had the blade bolt holes start to stretch at head speeds of only 1800, and if I had not caught it in time, they would have left the heli. There has also been documented instances of poor quality composite blades coming apart in the air. The most recently, was the rash of Align 600mm blades that had to be recalled. |
