e-Electric Motors & Controllers > FEDA using Acro 280 and Orion Mod with LIPO's

Hi,

I've tried both the Simprop Acro 280BB and the Team Orion modified, both using the same ( 9T) pinion....but noticed that the 280 gives much better throttle pick up and top end (although it is fatter and heaver!)

Can anyone advise whether I should be using a different pinion gear on the Orion to get the heli moving and better throttle response. When using the Orion the ESC light is turning red without the grunt of the 280BB.

If I use a 12T pinion, will this bog down the power response, or has the Orion enough guts to pull those blades up to speed quickly?

I've read so many good reports about the Orion, and its double the price of the 280BB, yet its not giving me what I expected....Please Help!!!

Oh, but the Orion is increadibly smooth, the blades pratically rotate under their own weight !!

Using 2cell Kokam Lipo's on standard ESC (Identical to Hummingbird)

Thanks All

James.

Pinion

I used a 8T pinion on mine and it spooled up great with the Orion. I found the pinions at my LHS. They were press ons made by Tamiya for these battery powered slot cars. Fit and worked perfectly.
Maybe this will help,

I would start with an 8 tooth on 7 cells or 2 kokams. I flew this setup for a while and the 8 tooth was best on the 280bb 6V motor with either the stock battery or 2x1200 E-Tec li-poly. 9 teeth gave great power but 8 gives similar power with longer flights and a cooler motor. I even flew it with up to 12 teeth pinion and the motor simply got too hot.

I have now started using Hornet Carbon Fiber fixed pitch main blades on my Hummingbird and switched back to a 9 tooth on 2x1200 E-tec Li-Poly and the motor runs very cool and there is little vibration with these new blades. The tail motor also seems to be running cooler on long flights - perhaps the CF blades are a bit more efficient and produce less torque?
