JR Heli Vibe - Airskipper - Sylphide - Venture > Vibe 50- Ball links BAD!

First of all let me start off by saying that the build process brought back the same feelings of excitement as when I first started the hobby. It's my first non-align helicopter and made me wish that the vibe 50 came out before the 600n. I mean this thing is just a beauty. During the build process I was just saying Wow!!! and Oooo!!! and always had to remind myself that this wasn't a .90; Very well thought out design and it shows that JR took their time instead of following the old Align copy-scale-push concept.

---
Now back to subject, I've heard a report from a fellow flyer who witnessed two other flyers at the field with vibe50s that had issues with their ball links either splitting in half or popping off the balls during "hovering". I can't say exactly for sure that's what happened (Hovering) as I wasn't there to witness what went on, but is this 2 isolated incidents or just a potential batch of bad links rolled out? I know the JR Ball links are tight, but surely if you properly size the links and insure that servos aren't overdriving and causing binding everything should be cool right?

Sorry I'm just a little worried.

In my build I had one fail I just poped it on and it broke . This might be a bad batch I built tons of JR airframes and never had a link break in setup .

I dont know how to fly just how to not crash !!!!!

The only problem I have heard of, is the one with the washout arm links. They are backwards, in the the ball should be inserted from the outside. So you need to insert the ball, then screw the ball to the swash. Otherwise you risk stressing of break the link.

I wonder why JR decided to reverse the washout mixing arms without making the change to the links? Anyways, I did follow the manual and was able to get it on without breaking it.

Pinecone, thats a great tip But now if I want to take out the arm I have to take out the swashball everytime? Anybody tried setting it up for trailing edge?

JR ball links are a POS, dont trust them at all, they have caused me numerous failures in the past. Buy some decent ones that aren't as brittle. Or failing that use some ALIGN ones

I had a ball link split on me. It was on the tail. I managed two piro autos, before it was pointed out that the ball link was cracked. I used the sizing tool.

But, after hearing this, I may replace all of mine.

I'd rather be flying

This is my first experience with JR links so I can't comment very far, but based on first hand experience trying to get them on the rods you wouldn't expect them to be popping out. I do hope that they aren't POS

Anyways so far you guys have suggested Align links, are these a direct fit?
I've heard about Rocket City links as well, how do these hold up? and,
are they a pain in the butt just like JR to thread?
Man this thing is making me nervous!

Not exactly, they fit the balls really nicely, no sizing required but the threaded rods are slighlty larger on the JR stuff, so you either relieve the align links or use different rods.

I've had too many JR links crack to risk them, and they look crap too....boring grey!!!

When you say relieve you mean pre-boring the link hole?
What are you using man?

Update

After posting this over a month ago I should've learned from you guys. Well since then I've had two costly crashes that have involved the link(shortest) popping off the main grips.

First crash(8/7/08) was about 30feet in the air, I was doing my normal routine & saw everything slow down in motion, saw one blade drop and then poofffff blades strike the boom and heli falls like a rock from 30'. Damage over $500, breaking entire frame, crankcase, engine head, pretty much everything.

Second crash(9/5/08), had just finish breaking in engine (9th tank) and started to get comfortable and wringing out the heli. Came in for a landing, hovered it for about 8 seconds 4ft off the ground hit throttle hold, then BAMMMMMM! strikes boom and hits the pavement!

--------------
I can't be the only person having this problem. If anyone is out there reading this and if you have a problem, please make it known!!!
I really like how the vibe flys, but if i'm going to crash everytime I go out because of the same stupid link popping off, then this Heli is not worth it.

I'm willing to give this Vibe one more chance, after that it'll go straight into the trash can; I literally mean it! So if there is anyone out there that can help me out, please let me know.

similar problem

I had a similar problem at the end of the spring. The entire link including the metal rod between the links came off. I was learning to fly at the time so I could not tell exactly how it happened. Note I had basically no damage (beside the link) since it happened at almost no load and the heli was still on the ground. I had no such problems since.
In the manual it is mentioned that the orientation of the ball links must be such that the side with the writing must be oriented towards outside. At the time I just assumed that I did not respected this indication. I also have the cyclic lock from CSM. It seems to work reasonable and eliminates any binding at high/ low collective (a bit overkill in my case), nice device though.

If you think that the ball links can lead you to crashes you can change all original ones with a different brand that you think is better. Personally I had no such problems with my raptor 50. And do not forget to verify if all parts function as they should be --> no strange noises can be detected when you load up the helicopter disc etc.

I would not encourage you to give up on such machine. However please let us know if it happens again then it is possible to be a major design fault. We need to know why it happens. It can be that the loads on the ball links are unacceptable high for any ball link. Therefore it is important to try to recall not only the conditions in which the heli fails but also those before especially it you are flying high demanding manoeuvres.

regards,
Bogdan

Trust me I don't want to give up on it. I've torn this heli apart part by part since my first crash and this crash didn't do anything but make my confidence level in this ship plummet.

I'm 100% sure I didn't miss anything in the build. The correct links were used and installed in the proper orientation. Hand checked the links and there would be no way in hell for these links to give, especially during a hover!!!!!!!

I need alternatives. The Rocket City links are great however, they are quite large and impossible to fit on the smallest link that goes on the main grips without binding and altering linkage throw geometry.
The Rocket City links are only good for 4 linkages, the linkages that connect the T-Arm to the Swash Links(2), throttle arm, and Tail control rod. On Servo horns, rocket city links causes binding against horns.

I'm going back to thee old tried-n-true Align links, problem is i'm going to have to dig around for linkage rods that'll work with the vibe. If anyone can point me to a site where they have linkage rods in similar sizes to the Vibe that'll work on Align ball links, or other links from a manufacturer that'll work with the 3mm rod, please let me know!!!!!

Thanks guys!

knock on wood but for now I didn't have any link problems with mine (+- 200 flights). I do know someone with a vibe 90 that replaces the links twice a year. It costs around $40 to replace them all and he considers it usual maintainace. I have so many JR links lying around (from LHS dumping JR stuff and my other kits) that it would be a real headache replacing them all.

I'am very pleased to hear that the rest of the Vibe50 crew is having better luck than I I have set my Vibe50 aside on the backburner for now and will be flying my 600n. In about a month or two, i'll return to the Vibe. It's quite disappointing to do this since the Vibe fly's way better than a 600, but since this heli has been so costly for me, I am forced to do it.

The Vibe will return trust me!
