Compass Knight 50 > Tail Servo Relocation Kit - problems

Wondering if others have had issues with the tail relocation kit:
- Servos screws are too tight to go through the holes in the servo adaptor plate, those 4 holes need drilling out to 2.7mm

- Insufficient back plates for the servo screws to screw into; there are none supplied for the tail servo so I ended up cutting the rear servo mounting plate and using that.

- spacers for the rear servo not supplied; luckily I had some in stock

- see-saw arm fouls against the side frame; either I'm gonna have to use the dremel on the side frame or add some washers to space the arm a bit lower.

Compass stuff is usual good quality, but in this case I feel a bit more time designing it and figuring out whats needed to fit it and providing all the necessary parts is in order. What should have been a 20 minute job turned into a couple of hours.

I had exactly the same problems. I was very well supported by Evo RC in the UK who supplied free of charge servo nuts and spacers outside of the kit. However, after wrestling with the mod I decided against using it. The gap between the throttle and rudder servo was around 0.5mm and I didn't think that this was good enough. The ball sockets on the additional linkage were really loose and there was no way of locking them. All in all for £20 pretty poor quality and badly thought out.

Don't feel bad, it cost me a bit more in time and money to do the first one I did. This was before the relocation assy. was offered.

For the price of the relocation kit it should certainly include all the pieces required to complete the mod.

I just had my first problem with my front mounted tail servo, and after only 12 flights. The carbon fiber rod from the servo to the bell crank came unglued from the alum adapter and and to auto due to no tail rotor control. I am not very happy with the quality of this mod.

I can post a clearer pic but not as close in. That particular setup is a Quick UK tail servo mount (just using one of the two boom mounted brackets suppled in the kit), with a carbon fiber bracket I made, swinging an Align bellcrank.

Here is a shot of the same configuration on one of my carbon fiber Knights.

I have since bought a better camera to take clear close up shots, but I'm running the servos on the boom now.

Concerning the Compass servo relocation kits, there are a couple things I don't much like about it.

First, the bellcrank swinging inside the frames, in front of the tank vent is quite inconvenient. Makes it hard to service/inspect the ball link there, and can interfere with the tank vent line.

Second, the CF control rod ends and how they screw onto the exterior of the ball links is just flat out cheesy IMHO.

Third, totally ridiculous that there would be interference between the frame, and the bellcrank.

Compass has shown an ability to engineer some of the finest heli stuff I have seen, this relocation kit definitely does not fit the category.

I wonder if there was a change of the sideframes along the way somewhere as my bellcrank does not interfere with the sideframes at all. I purchased all my knight 50 stuff this spring. I did have all the other issues, though. I used a couple 2mm (if memory serves correct) socket head cap screws to attach the throttle servo spacing block to the frames, with the screws going through the INSIDE of the main frame, and I had to shim my throttle servo a slight amount to keep it from interfering with the rudder servo. This fuel fitting prevents the rudder rod from rubbing on the tank vent line:

Duratrax DTXC8341 Pressure Fitting 90 Deg.

I just used a little bit of epoxy to secure the fuel fitting to the tank. The threads seem to be the same size as the stock vent line fitting but I was a little ham fisted during assembly and seemed to have stripped the tank a little. No problems after 3 gallons of flying.

IMHO all the kit needs is a little extra hardware to attach the throttle servo spacing plate to the chassis, hardware to attach the throttle servo into place, the throttle servo spacer needs to be a little thicker by just a little, maybe .5 mm or so, a 90 degree fuel fitting for the fuel tank vent, and of course it could really use an instruction sheet.

The 3D frames have undergone 4 distinct revisions (I have all four). The last one really has beefed up the front of the frames with considerably more material in the angled front "legs", and more meat under the reciever tray. The tray now must be relieved on the sides where it now passes between the frame, rather than under it.

While it is a very nice thing to see Compass upgrade their equipment, it does make it difficult to repair at times. If you were to order a new frame half, for instance, what version would you get? Would it match the other side?

I vaguely recall there was a change of frames some time ago and I probably have the older frames which may be why I have the interference problem. However, Compass should design the kit with appropriate optional parts so that the kit fits all types of frames - much like they provide different head parts for 6mm and 8mm spindles.

I ran into the same issues and ended up with 3 different frames.

One is about 12mm wide underneath the fuel tank and 17mm wide for the front skid legs.

Another is about 20mm wide at the front skid legs of the frame and 15mm wide underneath the fuel tank

Finally you have the one that has the V-shape from the front skid mount to the receiver tray (which I like) giving it more beef.

It is annoying as the part #'s are still the same and you have to go through the phone calls to compare sized and description before you order... Compass needs to get their act together and properly label their part #'s if they improve on something as they usually dont fit exactly when using them as replacement parts.

Tail conversion!

The tail servo side.
To do the tail conversion, I had to use the mounting screws from the tail servo and screw retainer from the throttle servo to mount the tail servo up front, there was no spacers (as shown in the diagram) for the tail servo in the kit but luckily I had some lying around from the original bits left over from the kit. The diagram shows the tail rod bell crank with the spacer part underneath, I had to turn this around and mount the balls on top (so spacer part of bell crank was at the top otherwise the bell crank rubs/binds on the frame.

The throttle servo side.
Since I had use the screw retainers from the throttle servo I had to use some more spacers (from the original bits left over from the kit) to use as screw retainers. The black derlin spacer for the throttle side is cut just right for the servo but does not allow for passing of the new smaller throttle servo cable through it so I had to file/melt a groove in it for the throttle cable to pass through.(removing the case is easyier) I used the original throttle screws on the derlin spacer and the supplied screw from the servo to mount the servo as well as the sourced spacer as screw retainers for the derlin throttle spacer.

The factory was informed of the missing items! and general possible problem between older frames V1 and V2 frames.

Bell crank needs to be turned around and balls mounted back on top
Need the tail servo spacer
Need another set of screw retainers
Derlin throttle spacer needs to bigger or groove cut out to allow servo cable to pass through without damaging it. (see above)

Talking of the carbon rod i run a 200mm rod inside and just use the standard ball links, Still not sure if that was changed but was asked for! throw the ends away!

Frames

V1-Knight 3d frame has a tank support rubber in the top right hand corner.
V2- Has a extra support rubber x1 added and relocated in front of tank and above its removed from the corner.

V1 and V2 frames are not able to be interchanged. Unless changed as a pair.

There was 4 the 1st was just prototype so not general release

The V3 is the same as the Carbon set same as V2 but front leg is stronger!

And I think there is no problems between V2 and V3 as far as single side changes, apart from the rec tray will have to be cut

I didn't like how the linkage was mounted so I moved it to the boom block, fabed a piece of CF to sit in the nitch of the swivel arm so that it's secure. That cheap wire they give with every heli for the tail controll is just plain lame.
petmotel, I like the linkage rods!!

What a PITA ! Like stated the kit is really lacking !

I have a bit of bounce now with the wire. I was using carbon rod to the tail mount before. Anybody else get a little bounce with the wire ?
