Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Converting to Diesel

With all the discussion of Nitro shortages, fuel costs, etc, is it possible (or has anybody tried) converting a Nitro engine to run on Diesel fuel? Back in Ye Olden Days there were lots of diesel model airplane engines, were they too low of power output to make any practical use?
Just curious...

It has been done, but it is difficult to get the correct gearing to exploit the deisels torque at the right revs, plus cooling can sometimes be a problem. The fuel is very messy and does smell a bit, but if you like tinkering it is a good fun project. I love my diesels but I prefer a glow engine for heli's, other than that I am slowly turning myself around to electrics.

Good luck
