e-E-Sky Honey Bee- Lama- Belt CP- E-Smart > Honey Bee FP = Honey Bee MK3?

I'm looking at getting a Honey Bee FP as my first real heli. xheli.com seems reputable and has a ton of spare parts/upgrades so I was going to order from them but I can't find a Honey Bee FP...only an MK3 listed under their Fixed Pitch category. Are these helis one and the same?

While I've got everyone's attention, which brushless motor should I upgrade to? I've read that the stock brushed motor will die after about 50 flights. Of course, by the time I've had 50 flights with this thing, I may be so broke and/or frustrated, I may no longer have the stomach for this

Any other upgrades/parts I should buy up front? Thanks!

The Honey Bee MkIII is the Honey Bee FP.

The Honey Bee FP motor should last longer than 50 flights. More like 80 - 100, if you don't use more than a 2S LiPo or the NiMH battery that comes with it.

As far as brushless upgrades, I wouldn't worry about it. Just throw another $7 motor in it and fly for another 2 or 3 months. You'll need the extra change for parts anyway.

Get some training gear. Other stuff:
Paddle Control Frame (outer) - at least 3 or 4
Ring-like Push Rods - 2 extra sets
Rotor Heads - at least 3 or 4
Landing gear - Go to your LHS and get BladeCP skids. Direct fit, and tougher.
Main frame/tail boom combo: Keep 1 on hand

That should keep you in the air 'til at least your next motor change.

Try using the code CJFREESHIPPING
It may work for......free shipping.

And follow this guide RELIGIOUSLY:
"RADD's School of Rotary Flight".

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you...

shizack,

Great info! Is there a vendor other than xheli (that is in the US) that you can recommend? They don't have rotor heads in stock and I'd like to buy everything at once to save on shipping (the coupon code you kindly provided appears to have expired).

Thanks again!

Mabaza,

Welcome to the addiction! I first learned to fly helis on the HBFP. First of all, when learning to fly, I wouldn’t recommend any mods to the HBFP other than a lipo battery and Super Skids. There is no sense in adding more expensive parts to break because you will crash and crash often while in the learning process. The stock HBFP is a very durable heli and is both easy and cheap to repair. Many crashes result in no damage at all. I also wouldn’t recommend upgrading to a more powerful brushed or brushless main motor while in the learning process. A more powerful motor generates more headspeed which results in more damage to head parts when crashed.

I wouldn’t mod the HBFP until you have mastered hovering in all orientations and can fly figure 8s and circuits in both directions. I would also strongly recommend the purchase of a high-end simulator like Phoenix RC, Realflight G4, Reflex XTR, Aerofly Deluxe, etc. Of course, the high-end simulator isn’t an absolute necessity, but will save you money in the long run.

As in many of the RC helis on the market today, there are many mods available to the HBFP. Regarding more powerful main motors, if you want to stay with brushed motors, I would recommend either the Slo-Max 300 (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMRK3) or the newly released Xtreme 380x motor (http://www.ka-planes.com/inc/sdetail/16851). If you go brushless, I would recommend the Arc 80 (http://www.lightflightrc.com). You may want to upgrade to a brushed or brushless direct drive tail, as well. There are many other mods and I could go on and on (which I won’t bore you with the information) on the potential of the HBFP. Eventually, you may want to build yourself a full-separates FP heli, as I recently just completed.

Also, see this site for loads of information on the HBFP: http://www.eflightwiki.com/eflightw...itle=HoneyBeeFP

The following are vendors I have used in the past that stock the HBFP and parts:

www.bphobbies.com
www.ka-planes.com
www.slickzero.com
www.ushobbysupply.com
www.helidirect.com
www.jaghobbies.com

All of these vendors will treat you right.

Good luck

Great info!

racin06,

Thanks for the warm welcome and great information. I just ordered an RTF HBFP, airframe-only HBFP (for parts) and a few extra rotor heads and flybars from www.bphobbies.com. Total was $160 shipped. I didn't order any lipos yet due to the risks associated with overcharging. Lipos also appear to require that you stop flying when voltage drops to a certain level. Not sure I need the added stress when learning to fly. Am I being silly?

No, you are not being silly. I first flew with the NiMh batteries. You don't get much flight time from the NiMH's, though...maybe 5-6 min. tops. An 800mAh 2S lipo will get you about 10-11 min. on a stock HBFP. I too was a little apprehensive about moving to the lipos; however, it's really no big deal if you take care of the lipos. By the way, the most commonly broken parts on the HBFP are:

- Rotor Head Set (can be repaired with thread and CA)
- Paddle Control Frame (Outer)
- Flybars (you can make your own out of 2mm CF rod. The flybar is 170mm in length)
- Ring-like push-rods
