Does anyone have experience with the water based paints. I know there are a few. The only one i can think of right now is Nelsons. I have a Vario gasser jet ranger, that i bought a few years back. My original thinking, was to keep it simple, just leave it the white gel coat color, and apple the vinyl trim that was made for this model. Well after putting it together, i noticed a lot of imperfections in the body. Not happy with the way it looks, i thought about trying to paint it myself. Basically, i just want to putty up the pin holes and seams, spray it white, and apply the vinyl trim. This is just going to be a sport scale. Nothing fancy. This is why the water based paints appeal to me. They seem easier to work with. I know i won't get the same finish as the automotive paints, but that doesn't bother me. So, am i getting in over my head? Should i pay someone to do it? I have a compressor. I just need a detail gun. Thanks.

If you are talking about water based paint in spray cans like the Krylon H20, I tried using that stuff on my Airwolf and it was horrible to work with. Sprays on unevenly, runs everywhere, just overall a bad experience.

But if you are talking about those you thin and use with airbrush, they works much better.

For spray can I found the automotive touch up paints to work really well. They are less expensive and are readily available at auto parts store. Plus their primers are really cheap compare to others.

Hi,

I did a very complex scheme on my LM Odyssey a few years ago - a total of 30+ coats to finish.....lots of masking, very intricate, a small compressor and touch-up gun proved more than adequate.

I used AUTOAIR Water based paints exclusively, with the exception of UPOL No.8 etch primer (Aerosol) to key the GRP, and 2K laquer to finish. Autoair is ready to spray from the bottle, no need to thin, but if you have to for any reason, then the thinner is, of course, plain water ! They have a HUGE range of colours, pearls, flakes etc including fantastic irridescent & chameleon colours

The Autoair paints were a joy to use, sprayed exceptionally easily, after spraying, a quick once over with a hair dryer cured the paint in seconds, ready for the next coat - so quick. For the Pearls & flakes, Autoair do a sealer, again waterbased which sprayed just like the rest and cured with a hairdryer in seconds. It allowed you to mask on top without disturbing the pearl/flake when removing the masking.

The worst part of the job was the 2K laquer, thinners & catalyst mixing it etc.....it splattered as I was finishing and I had to cut it back with metal polish to get rid of the splatter. I remember thinking at the time how easy the Autoair paints had been to use and how I had dreaded using the laquer, solvents etc etc.....only to have my worst nightmare happen on the final coat !

I had no previous painting experience and the results I achieved were aclaimed by a top UK custom airbrush artist.

From a novice point of view, It's great paint - can't rate it highly enough !
