I'm yet to crash my 600N Pro but just cost myself $120 starting it.

After turning everything on, making sure everything was working properly and throttle stick was down but forgetting to set throttle hold, I set the radio down to start the heli, It started WFO. Hanging onto the blades my first reaction was to close the throttle arm with my finger but servo was holding it. I looked at the radio and the strap had hung the lever in a way I couldn't pull it back with one hand. Finally I snatched the fuel line off but it was too late. Clutch got so hot it exploded, which also went through the left CF frame. Just added up the parts, $120 worth of pure FU.

People does make stupid mistakes sometimes.

A while back I crashed mine as I forgot to secure the servo horn screws. It costed me $250 to fix it.

Everyone has or will have a hot start at some point. Yep, welcome to the club. Sqeezing off the exhaust deflector is probably the quickest way to stop a runnaway.

I remember that day, I had the hold switch on before powering up the electronics on my 600N, the procedure for EP helis, it held the throttle at about 40%, prier to that I forgot to check the direction on my new tail servo and did a couple donuts in the grass, that was a fun day.

Got to love the embarrassment as everyone is watching you start the heli, then It fires and all hell breaks loose! Then the thoughts going through your mind that split second to try and figure out how to get it shut off and panic grabbing everything.

If it doesn't fly sell it!

We all have a hot start sooner or later. Its part of the hobby.

Maybe you should consider a switchglo. If you have the extra channel and your radio supports master/slave mixing (it should) then you can program the whole thing only to light your glow plug when throttle is under 10% and never in any other situation.

The unit isn't exactly cheap but attending that: a) you don't need a glow driver and b) you only need it to save you once to pay itself of.

I think its a hell of a deal.

LOL I flew my vibe 50 with the glow driver still on the plug. I'm glad it didnt end up in the blades getting flung at someone or something and crashing my heli.

The quickest way to kill an out of control (hot start) engine is to pinch the exhaust hose if you have one on your heli. It is faster than pulling the fuel line.

thats not good, I just did kinda the same thing. I had replaced the four screws that hold the fan onto the cluth assembly (trex 600 pro) and had put the canopy on without rehooking the throttle sevo back up cause i didnt have my radio out at the time, and forgot to hook it up later, when I decided to get a quickie in, at the park. As i fired it over the first time, it sounded a little deep throated, but before it registered why it sounded that deep, it fired up, luckily, it was only at 1/4 stick posistion and was able to pinch the fuel line off before any real damage.

that's why I always power up my heli's electronics, then flip into throttle hold. THEN I START. nothing like a hot start.... I don't like starting not in throttle hold cause you cant always trust programming. nothing like brain power

a lot of people at my field start in normal and I really don't like being near them when they do.

Helis are one thing... Everything else is rather Plane

Hot Starts/Safety

young3D has it exactly correct:

I have used this method for a LOT of years, and everyone that I work with/help get started, use the same method.....

You power up your tx, flip the hold switch, THEN turn on your rx... I do the same on both nitro and electric....

If you should hit the throttle while starting it or even while carrying it to the flight line, the HOLD SWITCH will save your A** every time.....

It is just too easy to get distracted at any moment and a hot start on ANYTHING is not something that I want to happen.... I have had (2) since 1990!!!! I think it works pretty good and a good habit to get into....

Good Luck Stan

If there is a cure for this, please don't tell me about it!!!

Yeah it has become a habbit for me to turn the radio on and flick the throttle hold switch before doing anything else, I inspect all the idle switches are down and then proceed to turn on the heli.
