I started this thread and thought I'd come back and share my thoughts with this incredibly fine bunch of helpful individuals.

I agree nose in is more mental than anything

So true!

Or is it physical? You need to have the kahonas to spin that baby around! That's all it takes. I found that once I got the nerve to spin it around I was fine. Yes, let instinct take over.

If you've mastered nose-in on the sim, and have a nice stable bird, GO FOR IT, YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I now nose-in on every flight, have taken off nose-in twice, and feel pretty good about things now. I'm still a bit nervous but I don't let that stop me, I just do it!

Thanks to everyone here who supported me through this frustrating stage.

What a great group of people we have here.

I was at a point where i could fly forward but had to fly backwards to bring the heli back to me even thouh I could fly nose in.
Each time out I try to concentrated on what is not comfortable for me.
I always now fly the heli back at me and never fly tail in back.
I have a problem with turning right for some reason.
My left turns are nice and smooth but my right hand turns don,t come natural.
I have to concentrate more on them so Eevry flight now I make more right turns than left and they are getting smoother.
I can fly fiqure 8,s easy.
I quess my point is not to just do whats easy but try harder at whats
not easy.
Every so many flights I realize things that were more difficult are happening now without thinking about it.
I flew airplanes for along time but helis are alot more challenging to get on too.
I watch other pilots doing 3d and amazed at how good they are because when you fly heli you realize just what it takes to be able to do that.
I attempted the other night a turn in backward flight and got so messed up I thought the heli was done, somehow I saved it.
I have tryed it on the sim and see it is just plane hard.
I have gave up for now on 3d and just need to make sure I have
everything else under control.

i disagree with carzan. take off tail in bring the heli up at a safe altitude . then rotate heli 180 degrees so that you are nose in. hold her there as long as you can. remember just push the stick in the same direction as the heli is drifting. when learning height is your friend. as you you become more confident bring her lower and so forth. hope this helps.

shut up and fly

Nice job. Your pushing yourself and you did it!
Im working on nose in hovers as well....Inverted. I can hold it for about 20 secs before I need to bail out.
Keep up the good work.

Congrats! We knew you could do it. To keep in practice, I do nose in every flight.

wanted to repost. i'm pretty comfy nose in now. having a minor issue though. i get her up about 15 or 20 and when i spin her around she drifts hard to my right or the pilot side of the heli. i can compensate no problem and hover steady nose in all day, but what might be causing the drift. i have her setup with little to no trim needed and stable hover. can't figure this one out. it's taught me better control nose in i guess. how do i fix though.this happens on my 450rex. haven't done any nose in with the raptor 50 yet. thought this may just be characteristic of the smaller bird.

Indeed, this is a common phenomenon. Most people have a preferred turn direction (usually left). I've heard people say that this is because of the CW-turn of the main rotor, but this is not the case: it is just an orientation/coordination issue, and you are going in the right direction (no pun!) by training this out of you.

In the 80's I read a "The Right Turn Syndrome" article in an RC magazine that dealt with this odd difficulty in flying planks & gliders. The conclusion was that we just need to train more, as you are doing, the less-preferred turn side.

Good stuff.
Have an escape plan, whatever it is. When nose in, left stick forward gets it up and away from you. Altitude is your best friend. Gives you plenty of room to turn around and get yourself re-oriented. Don't worry about how cool it looks. That's not the point right at first.
And while you're at it, have some fun.

When all else fails, there's still brute force and ignorance ...

Yes I can fly nose in on the sim with no problem, my fear which I have to get rid of is crsashing it or the heli coming at me, beause when you fly nose in the controls are reverse. But in order to progress you are going to have to do it. I crashed because I learn tail in and then went right to figure 8's and when the heli turned around nose in I panic and crashed. Right them i knew i had to learn nose in so I went back to the sim to learn it.

Flat 360's are what did it for me. I just kept going around and around until I was coming full stop at nose in. Then a very small slight bulb went on and I can control nose in for a couple minutes before I make a mistake. Have a plan to get out. either altitude or bang the rudder.. I'll tell you this much the confidence this gave me almost in the same flight I put her inverted and know the final four orientations begin. Good luck and fly at least twice a week. helps me a ton.

ruddernate,

It's your offset doing it. My heli's (500 and 600) do the same thing. Do a tail in hover. Notice your stick is forward and left for example? Well nose in is opposite and requires back and right to keep her in on spot.

Opposite offset is required.

Nose in is cool. I just got my inverted nose in happening.
Tail goes the other way.
We are all sill learning and that is what it's all about.
nice flying today with a bail out in the mix.

Get a cheap beater, something that don't hurt the wallet to crash.

I have my good heli's, 600N Pro and 450SE V2 and then I have my training heli's, Kinetic 50 and a MX450 with Align head and tail. I use the MX450 as my main trainer and the Kinetic 50 as my nitro trainer. I've probably crashed that MX450 100 times. The landing gear is held under it with tie-wraps, I've straightend the frames a number of times, The last time I counted I had 27 bent tail booms and couldn't even begin to tell how many main shafts and spindles and wood blades. I keep about 1/2 dozen sets of blades, 9 - 12 main shafts and a dozen or so spindles, along with some other supporting parts. I fly the MX450 to learn on, then the Kinetic 50 to get comfortable on the bigger nitro with what I've been learning. It's not until I'm comfortable with it that I fly it on my Trex's. One other good thing is the Trex's fly sooooo much better than those trainers, everything I've learned is a hellava lot easier on them, but it sure is nice when you can crash five times for less than $100. No way could I afford to do that with the niro's if that was all I was flying.

I fly the sim until I get somewhat competent with what I want to do, then I pratice on the heli. Don't care how you slice it or dice it, the sim is close, but there no substitute for the real thing.
