| OK, for anybody wanting to know the same thing, I have had a play with all the ch5 settings now and answered my own question.
When the gyro page is turned off, the ch5 ATV is active and adjusts the movement of the servo via the ch5 flap/gyro switch.
When the gyro page is turned on, the ch5 ATV is inactive and will NOT affect any adjustments you make in the Gyro page.
However, by setting the values to exactly the same in both the ch5 ATV and gyro page, ie -40% +85% as I use for a GY401, and plugging in a servo to ch5. You will find the servo movement is exactly the same if using the gyro page or the ATV page.
So really you don't need to use the gyro page to run your gyro if you don't want to tie the gyro into your flight mode switch. Just use the ch5 ATV page (via the gear switch), if like me this is what you used to do to set the gain on your gyro. It makes no differance, you'll be using the gear switch to adjust the gain anyway. But seeing as you have a nice gryo page on the DX6i, you may as well use it rather than using the ATV page to set your gain.
I don't like setting up my gyro in the FM switch because I always fly in HH. I have one setting in rate mode on one side of the gear switch and one setting in HH on the other side of the gear switch. The HH amount is governed by how much gain I can run in full idle up, as this will be the most demand on the gyro. When flying on a lower head speed, you will have more than enough gain. I then, every now and then (once per gallon of fuel), flick the switch over to rate mode to check the mechanical pitch to make sure everything is still OK, and the links if necessary.
Tying the gain into the flight mode switch does not give you this instant ability to check your mechanical pitch, and you will find yourself relying on the gyro totally to keep things straight.
Non of the above is of any relevance to my original question that I have worked out myself, but people do search for the answer to these sort of questions and maybe the above will be of use to somebody later on in a search???
