Hmm, then you would have a singing heli as you fly your circuits, the envy of all the other pilots.

The bottom line is having fun.

GPS will also work fairly well for a grid search. If nothing else, grab 2 6ft poles and put a bright orange flag on em. Stick one in the ground, walk 40-50 yards, stick the other in the ground, walk towards the first flag. Try offset you're "return path" by a couple of feet. When you get back to the first flag, move it over 6 feet (or roughly one step and an arms reach) and repeat. Lengthly, tedious and time consuming yes but cheap and thorough as well.

I feel for you! I've been through this with a blinged T-Rex 450SE complete with camera mount and Canon S60 digital camera. Never found it!

I just saw one of these on a commercial. It's a little pricey, but I guess it's cheaper than a new bird...

Here is how we find things that go down out in the sticks at my club - it never fails... even if it's pretty far away.

1. Do not take your eyes off the spot where it went down, and do not walk anywhere until you've fixed that location.

2. Point your antenna or your hand directly at that spot and freeze.

3. Move only your eyes and head around and figure out the exact spot where you are standing - it is handy if you're in dead center of a pilot pad or sitting in a chair or something you can fix on later as you start to walk away.

4. Pick the most distant object you can see that is in a direct line from where you are standing to the spot your hand or antenna is pointing at.

5. Begin walking in that direction, periodically turn around and make sure you are on the line between the two 'marked' points - the distant object and the spot you were standing.

6. Search about 10-15 feet to the left and right of that spot as you walk.

Usually you will find that the bird went down much farther out than you thought, but you will almost always find it directly on that line you marked. Of course, if you don't do this the moment the bird goes down, you're hosed. Freezing and getting your bearings before you run after your bird is the most important part. We have found 6-inch propellers this way in pretty thick grass. Trust me, it works.

Good luck! I hope you find your Blade!

Please post if you find it. I find myself lying awake at night thinking about how much it would suck to loose my heli to tall grass. It would be nice to hear you found it by some miracle or something.

Theres a post in the DIY Electronics forum on RCgroups that has plans for a simple location beeper that goes off when the radio loses signal.

They say the switchglo can help find lost birds but I doubt I would buy it for that purpose.

Can you not go out in the area and try to throttle it up a bit to see if you hear it trying to spin up or chop through the brush? might not be good for whatever is left but probably better than losing it forever...

hope you find it

Supposedly the Align ESC can do that. I don't know if it actually works though. Probably would with 72MHz radio, but not sure if it would work with Spektrum, as it continues to send a signal to the ESC if you turn off the radio.

Why not? It has helped me find my bird more than once. Just flick the switch and the 90db beep will guide you.

Last time I lost a bird in the bushes it took me 3 minutes to find it. When I didn't have the switchglo, It took me 2 hours and I was already imagining loosing $3000 worth of equipment.

Obviously I have a nitro bird so the switchglo is doing its primary purpose (avoid hotstarts and ignite the plug with a flick on the radio switch) but I also used it to warn me of failsafe conditions (triggered by loss of signal)

It's usually twice as far out as you think. Keep looking.

I'll second that notion. Seriously though, it's usually WAY farther than you'd think.

Cplearner, It's sad to hear that - I remember the time I lost my old rappy, cutting high grass with a machete for two days like crazy, after finally when I gave up and found a place to rest quit far from the search area - I spotted it just sitting there, wet from the dew.

Good luck in finding it.

LOL, I had a plank go down in a field of high corn. I looked and looked and looked for days on end. Never found it.

In the fall, the farmers found it when they ran it over with their machinery. They sawed the tail off. All of the electronics were find after 6 months outdoors. The engine didn't even have rust on it. I was absolutely amazed!

Good luck with your search. It's tough when you loose an A/C in thick vegetation.
