e-Electric General Discussion > Questions about a nasty Kyosho electric I've dug out

Can I direct you to my gallery?

I bought this about 4 years ago (shortly after I built my Shuttle) purely on a whim.

It's a bit nasty, and I have flown it but I think it's in a terrible state (sounds really rough - or maybe that's electric helis through and through!)

I've just dug it out of the garage after being in a box for 3 years.

Anyway, here are the pics and details:

Radio: Futaba Skysport 6H (model FP-T6VH)
Charger: 12V DC TeamLine PRO-PEAK 6-7 Cell Delta Peak Fast Charger 500-800mAh
Helicopter: I only know it's a Kyosho - don't know model number
Receiver: Futaba UAL ONVERSION 8 channel receiver, model FP-R138DF
Gyro: Century Piezo
Servos: Futaba FP-S148

I doubt anyone's familiar with this craft - but if they are, any advice would be welcome because I don't have any manuals. I bought it pretty much as you see it.

QUESTION: To charge the main battery I think I have to connect it to my 12V starter battery? But is it OK to connect it directly to the transformer that I use to charge the starter battery? (and probably I need to swap the red and black terminals?)

Kyosho concept EP,

Had one of these years ago, absolutely loved it for flying in the backyard, worst problem was short flight times.
Only set one up for a friend of mine last year, I still enjoyed it !

If its running rough then the gears maybe tight or worn out, the bottom part of the frames should come of if I remember right and you will see all the gear train. Make sure everything is as smooth as possible, and the tail pushrod is supported at regular intervals down the boom.

How you have connected the flight battery to your charger and supply battery looks all ok.

If you want parts, im pretty sure Midland have still got a box full of bits, other than that not sure about part availabilty.

Thanks DOKEY,

I've also posted a question on charging the batteries on the Electric - Batteries board, don't know if you can help out with that one?

Kyosho Concept EP - finally (after 4 years) I have a name for it :-) Thank you!

We have a winner...

Yep Concept EP.
I am helping a buddy out with one and they generally sound like they have gravel in the gearbox. Very noisy gear train.

It Flew!

(right into the settee...)

Waiting for the 1700mAh batteries to charge from the 12V starter battery I've got seemed not to work (I've two 1700mAh batteries - one I put on the 12V starter battery).

The other battery I blasted with 800mA from my main-powered charger (the thing I use to charge the 12V starter battery)

And hooked it up and it flew! Thing was, I was being a bit ambitious - I flew it in my (small) lounge and on the second hover it struck a settee, so now the blades have a slight buckle in them and the flybar's bent. But I'm happy that it still seems to work :-)

QUESTION: Is it OK to push 800mA into the 8.4V 1700mAh Nicad heli batteries? And if so, should I make sure I take them off after, say, an hour? (unfortunately today it was on for 6 hours! The battery was warm (not hot to the touch) and it still flew so maybe it doesn't damage it)

Or should I be charging at 170mA for 14-16 hours as it says on the label?

What charger are you using?

There are many inexpensive peak detecting chargers that will charge that pack quick...

For flight times, I'm getting around 10 minutes on my brushless EP with Panasonic 3000 mAh x8 batteries. I can charge the pack in just under 40 minutes... I'm using real blades though

Hi pwkpete,

The Charger I'm using:

It's a charger I bought in a model shop in Germany when I lived there. I bought it along with the 12V starter battery you saw in the pic.

The label on the charger says, "Titan Netzladegeraet 602" (that's the make and model name) and then the translation of the rest of the label is, "For batteries up to 12V. Maximum charging current 800mA".

Then there are four sockets: 50 70 180 500 that I can combine to get the required charging current (e.g., I'd just use the 180mA socket to get the (close-to) 170mA that the heli battery label says it wants - although I'd have to wait 14-16 hours then!!, or I'd add all four sockets for 50+70+180+500=800mA maximum charging current)

WHAT BLADES? I could do with some replacement blades, flybar and paddles - can you advise what I need to ask for? The ones on there are plastic things, but maybe they are lightweight and that's what are required.

Darren,

Sorry it took so long for the reply, I never got a message...

Anyway, 800 mAh should be fine. If the battery is completely empty and capable of taking full charge, it will charge in a little over 2 hours. It looks a little old, so it probably will not take the entire capacity. (At 1700mAh, that battery will charge in 1 hour...)

You may have done a little damage to the batteries leaving them charging at 800mAh for 8 hours. I wouldn't do that on a new pack!

rc-city.de may be able to help you with blades, avoid the 'foamies' like Boyd mentioned. (Unless you want to fly in the house)
