Stupid ques. are easier to fix than stupid mistakes, so here goes. Is a sim only good for learning stick orientation while learning certain manuevers or will it help to see the reaction of the bird from your stick inputs. Can't decide if I should get one or not,and if so,WHICH ONE.

Simulater?

Get one, you will learn faster (at least most do),save big bucks in crash damage and still be able to fly regardless of the weather. If you get G-2 you can go online and fly with others-that's a lot of fun and a good learning experience. It really helps with confidence as well. It has a feature that allows you to have a graphic of a radio on screen and you can see the stick movements.

Get one!!!! I 've got the G2 sim, and use my tx. It will help you from
hovering to aerobatics. Instead of crashing your heli learning some thing new, just hit the space bar and try again on the sim.

They Work

I am just using FMS its free I bought a kit to build the interface for 25$ and It has just made me fly so much better I have only burned a gallon and a half and Im already Inverted hovering and doing mild aerobatics So for 25$ you can have a sim I havent tried Real flight G2 so I dont know how it compares But FMS will let you learn its just like the real thing.

i had well over 100 hours on real flight before i flew a heli, and i had no instructor to help me, i flew twice with the training gear and said F*** that S***! i could hover fine and land without it, and i found that i learned faster without the training gear, i tended to focus on the dumb orange balls! just having it on there didnt feel right to me!

id get realflight! forward flight on a simulator is BS, but its great for hovering!

Get it, you will love it. The guys here have given all of the really good reasons for having one. So I will not repeat the obviouse. But I will say that they really do improve your learning curve for sure. And sometimes I just like seeing how bad I can crash it, just for kicks. Becouse I would never do that on purpose with my real helis. I have Real Flight G2 as well. I think it's sweet. If I could just figure out what is wrong with a small part of the program. But I think it might be something else. So I can't fault the program just yet. But the graphics rock for sure.

I tried G2 because I heard it is the best, but keep in mind that it is EXTREMELY FUSSY in terms of video / audio cards and PC's. Wouldn't work with my P3 1.0GHz etc... Gateway, so I had to return it. I got the $25.00 FMS at I love it! Either way, I definitely recommend one.

Mega dittos!!!!

Howdy!!!!
Ditto what all these guys said!! Simulators are well worth the money. I am running a Dell 600mgh with a g-force 2 card and 96meg of ram, and it runs great. It's the Real Flight simulator...

Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours

Do It! The sim is the way to go. All aspects of full scale aviation use simulation tech, and I am glad we have it here in our hobby as well.

CSM V10!

Hey guys i'm sure G2 is great but i've heard it takes a heck of a computer to run, if you don't have the nicest computer csm can run on a lot simpler computers, and a lot of people say that it has better physics than G2.

But for sure simulators are the best thing ever for learning so fast!

Get a Sim

I am speaking from personal Air Force experience…when you go to the military or large flight training facilities, you will spend a lot of hours in a flight simulator. It is not just for procedural technique, it is to accelerate your learning process while spending the least amount of money. Also in today’s full size aviation you can get completely check out on a type of aircraft without ever going to the flight line. And one more thing, today’s Sims can produce any visual and physical cue you would ever see in the real thing…. exception is you can’t be killed in a simulator!

IMHO the G2 has the most accurate physics flight models, it would be my recommendation.

You choose your own though, just get one and have fun and learn.

OK, new helo pilot,Carl, got the sim (G2) at Oshkosh last August. Played/Practiced until finishing his Scoobie-doo 50 last week. I made a trainer gear from 1/4" sticks and wiffle balls...I should have saved my time!!! He picked the heliup into a 1 foot hover...45 left...45 right...backwards..forwards...a complete waste of wiffle balls! He's on his second gallon of Powermaster and doin' circuits! Loops and rolls are next on the agenda! Sims are the only way!!! ( But I do miss the newbie crashes... ) Chris

Flight Sims

NEWBEE,

I know its just your opinion and that is okay, alot of things on the forum are opinions and others are fact.

Because of the state of increasing technology, flight sims in the full scale aircraft are one of the most important training tools. As I said in a previous post, not only to save money, but to save aircraft and lives!

Today you can do anything in a flight simulator, except die,...now that is not a video game, it is very serious business and taken that way.

R/C sims have seen a great technology growth also, and if used correct
they can teach you how to fly...it is also no video game.

Get a sim or try one out, if you can fly the sim correctly your chances of succeeding in the reality world will be increased an order of magnitude.

Just my opinion,
Mike

I agree with Mike on this one. I hold a Commercial Multiengine Instrument ticket and the sim training to get me there was very important. It could simulate difficult situations without putting me in peril. I had one inflight emergency with my entire family on board. After it was over and we were safe on the ground my wife remarked at how calm I was. It was all training. We have a number of great sims available for our hobby. My kids who are great at videogames still have difficulty flying G2. Approached correctly the sim is a tool for improvement and overall pilot training.

Add: Most large carriers now type rate their pilots totally in the sim.

Sims

Rotax,

I am a beginner too. I use the CSM sim. It works great for learning.
I have one piece of advice. After learning how to fly with your real heli don't practice too much with the sim on different menuvers. For example I practiced quite a bit on the sim learning nose in hover. That was a mistake. I took my heli out to the flying field and did a nose hover it was great. I got so good at it I went brain dead when I swung my heli back around and I lost control of it, I was still trying to fly it nose in. Needless to say I crashed before my brain could straighten back out.
So don't practice one thing on the sim too much.

Sounds like a good piece of advice, thanks. We're all entitled to a brainfart ounce in a while. I just thought it would be good for stick orientation. [ Which stick motions make the model do what maneuvers]
I ordered a G2 today, It'l be here friday.
thanks
