Anybody out there have a G2 recording of a rolling circle they would share with me? I cannot even get close to starting one and would like to get an idea of the stick movements.

Thanks.

Tim, I made a quick recording for you. Go into my gallery and scroll down to downloads and click G2 Rolling Circle.

Good Luck!

One more thing...

Rolling loops are basically the same, just change the timming on the elevator.

Tom, thanks for the reply. I sent you a PM.

Panos, I'll try to break it down, but was just looking for some guidance. Thanks for your comments.

I think what Pete is trying to say is that you should be proficient in inverted circuts and upright circuts. Then you just fly one then roll over and fly the other.

I find as I pracice them I am saying to myself "inverted, upright, inverted, upright...". I actually pause upright and inverted for a quick second to do corrections in course and speed. As you become more proficcient at it, they smooth out.

Best of luck,
keep practicing,
Malorie

bet it keeps its speed better through a rolling loop as well , not haveing the aerodynamics of a brick like most helies

Rolling Circles is still not in my tricks bag, so I might be wrong

Rotodigger,

I just saw your rec clip while looking at the control inputs ... I thought a rolling circle was supposed to use direction-alternating rudder inputs (i.e. left & right rudder) as well as collective management ... from your recording, it apears you're only using collective to control the "circle" part. Is this the "right" way of doing the maneuver or is it the easy way of doing it ?

rudder works for me, you can even only use rudder for either upright or inverted part of the trick.

I suppose you could use rudder instead. Actually I use the elevator in combination with the collective to make the turn. I prefer to leave the rudder alone and let the gyro keep it in line. That way if I make a slight misjudgement the tail doesn't get all wacky on me and it keeps a nice tight roll.

Elevator when going knife edge and rudder when not.

I started doing then with just rudder, and eventually learned to use the elevator. You can do it with either or both. For me, they just look nicer with both.

Haven't been able to get the rolling loop yet.

That clears things up a bit, thanks a lot.

I can barley do a rolling circle (sim) using rudder only ... so I'll practise adding elevator & collective inputs to help it turn around once I master it.

Thanks for the comments.

no need for any rudder really

(from the center of the circle, mast facing center = "rotor disc in")
(assuming the heli is travelling "forward")

1) disc in, cyclic back (at or near zero pitch)

2) disc out, push the cyclic (at or near zero pitch)

3) maintain altitude with the collective when the machine is upright or inverted

4) maintain heading with the disc in - disc out

5) maintain speed when upright or inverted with the fore and aft cyclic

with my raptor 30 (which is harder than hell to do this)....I will do my heading changes at or near the 45 degree bank angle to the center of the circle...later than that tends to make it fall out of the sky and lose a lot of speed too.

Also, they are much easier when rolling with the circle. i.e. Doing a right hand circle is easiest with a right roll. I'm not sure why, but I'm hoping that it isn't a pilot induced problem...

its not considered a rolling circle if you roll in the direction of the circle

Huh? What is it then?

If the heli is in a constant right-hand roll and is travelling in a circle to the right, that is not a rolling circle?

What about a loop or a figure 8? Half would be a rolling circle, and the other half would be a not-so-rolling-circle?

funny but theres some truth to it to.

or if you do one roll per circle?......

ah well no one takes anything I have to say sincerely anyways. dunno why

Rolling Circles Continued

Hey Pete. I just wanted to drop you another note of thanks for the recording. I've been working on it a lot and can get about 3/4 of the way around now (pretty ugly, but I'm getting there). One problem I seem to have is that I keep losing forward momentum. Any thought on why that occurs? Also, could I talk you into recording a backward rolling circle? I've tried a couple of times and it doesn't seem to be a simple reversal of the forward rolling circle.

Thanks again,
Tim
