Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Gassers on the rise.

Posting in the gasser section has increased quite a bit in the last few weeks.

Have some of you been out buying gassers now with the nitro costs up?

I know me, for one, will stick with gas if the nitro prices stay where they're at. I'm building my first gasser. My style is smooth 3D. I used to want a 90 bad, but nitro at 4 bucks a flight holds no interest for me anymore.

I think you'll find in here that guys would fly gassers even if nitro was a buck a gallon...

What I mean is if you look at May posting there's like 3 topics per day.

Now there's like 15. I think a lot of old gassers are getting the dust blown off.

"Gassers on the rise"

Sounds like "the rise of the machines" from a Terminator movie! Maybe the gassers are going to Terminate nitros!

I do think there is alot more activity here. The biggest nitro argument is they pop better and change directions quicker, but I think that is becoming harder and harder to justify and swallow with the rising nitro costs.

But Billme is right. Some time ago I was working on a project for MIT and I had a nitro version of the Xcell machine in my basement (a 99se 90 heli) complete and ready to go with FREE FUEL (they paid for it). I could go fly it anytime I wanted, I kept and maintained it for them and brought it to the field when we/they wanted it to fly missions, but nevertheless even with the free fuel when I went down to the basement to grab a heli to go fly, I would always take my gasser over that machine as I didn't want to deal with field boxes, the damn thing quiting before spoolup on the runway, and having to clean it after I got done flying.

Gassers give me just as much pleasure if not more as I don't need to clean with 10 papertowels afterwards -- 1 will be enough to clean two gasser helis.

Gassers on the rise

I think that you are absolutely right Raja.Ease of operation is for me one of the most attractive aspects of gassers.I have to say that i think that the cost of nitro is going to have a big impact on choice of helicopter in future.I cannot see nitro fuel ever becoming any cheaper in the short term if at all.A lot of my friends i have noticed are flying less these days and are definately showing interest in my gassers.A lot of them cannot believe how long a much bigger engine will fly on the same amount of fuel.

I had a gasser last year and sold it for a motorcycle. I got over that real quick and just had a bad itch for a gasser again. I wanted a reliable high quality 3D capable machine and decided on the Spectra G.

With the nito prices on the rise that just made my decision to buy it now much easier. I have a Raptor 90 3D which I love to fly when I am in the stick banging mood but find myself flying more graceful 3D maneuvers than stick banging so the gasser is prefect. I also like to fly long flights which the economy of the gasser allows me to go.

I hope more manufacturers will provide us with a gas version of there models.

One mile of road will take you one mile. One mile of runway will take you anywhere in the world.

Gasser is great for endurance and ease of operation but the convenience of the electrics may soon overtake them as costs of LiPos come down. Both have a place in the heli world and I enjoy using each as they have very different flight characteristics which makes a nice variation.

Gassers on the rise

I agree,Lipo batteries have come down a lot in price but you still have to have at least two large expensive batteries and the charge times in between flights could be inconvenient.(With large Heli,s).Its quite possible that lipo batteries will make flying the larger helicopters a more feasible alternative to glow when the costs come down but i feel a lot of people seem to like either IC or electric and some would not convert.I have a 400 size electric that i find is convienent as i can just take it out of the car and fly.

Battery powered models

Are cool if they are small, like a trex 450 or similar which still costs about $0.50 at best to $1 a flight. When you get into a large heli with electrics, they are costing the same or even more per flight than nitros. The only difference is that you prepay for "gas" in the form of a battery. And nurse it all you want, you're not going to get much more than 100 flights out of it, at least I don't see that on my trex 450 with TP 2100 packs. They do drop off in power after about 25 flights, and, by the time you get to 75 flights they are still flyable but nowhere near as fast rotor speed as a new battery - you can hear the difference when you take off.

Nevertheless electrics are cool and clean to operate. Short flight times indeed, so you need a half a dozen packs to get your fill when you go to the field.

I've converted my 450 to a night flying machine now. I love my gassers during the day, and at night I get an extra bang for my buck a flight flying it in the dark with night lights.

Lipo Prices

As said ,larger Lipo batteries may have come down in price a bit,but at $300 a pop, thats way too rich for my blood, especially when you need several.I can siphon an hrs worth of gas out of the wifes car for nothing.

Lipos at $300 a piece and a good chance of loosing it in a crash? no thanks. I think a 500 sized eli on a123 is the biggest id go with electric. I cant wait to get the spectra up and running!

I had Mexican for lunch yesterday, and became a generator that made gas for a good 6 hours afterwards.

fyi - I've seen 6S 4500'ish LiPo's for under $200 - hobbycity and whatnot. under $30 for 2100 3S packs that run great.

...yep...

There were only two gasser's at our field as of last fall. Now there are 6 with a 7th being built as we speak. Nitro going to $30 bucks a gallon will have a hugh impact on the nitro market, but all those guys will have to sink $1600 to $1800 into gasser airframe, engine, muffler and blades to convert over to gas. I think most of them will just suck it up and buy the 30% nitro and keep flying. Especially since their nitro birds are only worth 50% of what they have in them for resale. We can only wait and see.
