e-E-Flite Blade CP mCX CX 400-3D > Blade CX2 Blade CX2 Crash - Loss of Signal?

Okay, been flying this for a couple months and really enjoying it. Only a few chipped blades ... till now.

Was doing some nice rolling turns at the park when I chose to take it up to a higher altitude. It was about 350 to 400 ft up and 500 to 600 ft downrange when the motors stopped! Of course it dropped like a rock and didn't show any power recovery all the way down. When I approached it I checked the controls and everything was functioning. Thinking back, the heli was tail in and my tranmitter (Stock LPD5DSM - showing 5.6 volts) was pointing directly at it without the antenae cocked at any angle creating the lowest possible connectivity. Damage - outer shaft/ body demolished (probably took the shock for the rest of the bird). I'm thinking everything adds up to signal loss of some type and it kicked into fail safe. In the time between flight and ground wasn't long enough to re-arm the receiver.

Opinions/feed back welcome.

Does anyone know the range of the radio system or vulnerabilities?? Err, would like to avoid this in the future.

Thanks.

Sounds to me you simply just ran out of power and down she cam.

How could you evevn see the thing at 500ft..??? 400ft up, thats what killed ya.. It takes juice to get up that high.

I think it was 200 ft or so.

It kept climbing, then, fell like a shot bird.

Thanks Gyronut,

No shortage of power, like I said, I checked the controls after the fall and that included power which was fine. Besides I don't ever over discharge the packs. Yeah, seeing at that height is a challenge, doing a pirouette when necessary helps to confirm orientation.

Bravo MMike, thought I was alone on this. 200 feet sounds pretty low still. Do you recall what voltage your tx batteries were at?

I've had that happen to me a couple of times. If details are requested i'll post but it's kind of a long story. Anyways, the problem lies within overheating the 4in1. The esc being it's main "over current" function is going to be the first one to fail in any type of extraneous situation. Even though you had full control once the heli was on the ground it overheated and died midflight. There's the potential for the thing to loose at least 20deg from the time it died till the time you walked up to it and that's probably why everything seemed normal. The cx2 isn't made for outdoor flight. Let alone 400ft. If you think about it, the thing would have to be pinned at wide open throttle for approx 4/10 of a pack to even get that high. That's gonna put a huge load on something that was designed to fly in your living room don't you think? You have to think of a way to reduce wind/body drag as well as (substantially)increase cooling to the 4in1.

PS, many people exagerate heights and distances. NO I'm not accusing you of doing this, I'm merely trying to keep up a standard that I learned during motocross. 30ft means you are over a normal 2 story house. 400 feet means that you could land on top of a 40 story highrise.

with 2 ears and 1 mouth you should listen twice as much as you talk

500 volts.

Seriously, about 5 volts.

I would repeat test with a range check.

Good point about distances. I would say I was 7 houses up. So best to divide previous numbers by 2. I wouldn't say I was on full throttle, maybe 4/5ths for a bit then 3/4. Once it made it higher than the tree line the wind created extra lift. Good point on the ESC and the 4 in 1. Thanks.

Sky

I like my CX and fly it a lot.

I use my DX7 now and don't use the TX that came with it.

I'm guessing the DX7 has better range, but I can't say I've proved it.
