Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Spectra build questions

I have a few questions concerning the assembly of my Spectra. I appreciate any input you all may have with your experience running this machine.

- 1 with the rotor head build, how many and what shims did you use. I put in just one medium shim as opposed to the thin and thick together.

-2 with the engine assembly, did you use the braided insulated spark plug wire of just leave the stock one on. I had a Predator last year and the stock wire was fine for me. Do I really need this with a PCM radio?

-3 What are you able to get the fan run out down to. I was able to get 3 thousandths without even trying for better.

I am sure I will have more questions next week. Thanks.

1. There are 2 different heads, on my Tempest, I built it exactly like the instructions say.

2. Nope, left it off, my Pred doesn't have one, and never had a problem. Haven't had a problem with the Spectra without it.

3. .0015 is what mine came down to without trying.

I love mine, it built fast, and flew great right off the bench. Got the kit last Friday, and did the maiden yesterday. If my kid hadn't been sick, and my first engine I installed hadn't been f-ed up, I'd have flown it on Monday. Awesome heli.

1. which rotor head do you have, the tempest or extreme?

2. The wire shield is a good idea, but not a requirement. A lot of folks have had problems with it winding up too close to the copper plug clip and arcing. I've run without it for years, and have run it now for a while. I see it as a way to quiet down one more source of noise on the model but it should work just fine without it.

3. I usually won't run it over .001" total runout. check the end of the crank before you start to make sure its good.

then file off the sharp edge on the top flat part of the crankshaft. I turn the fan on the crank as I tighten the bolt in small steps until its too snug to turn and then tighten it down. You may have to tighten/loosen/reposition the fan several times but if the crank runout is good you can get the fan run out down.

I have the extreme head. I think I may try and get the fan positioned a bit better. I have decided to leave the shielded spark plug lead off as it seems more trouble than it is worth.

I typically just use the thick shim

I don't know what is being packed in the kits now, but you can get 90 durometer damper inserts that replace the double o-ring type dampers of the past. Using these reduces the need to compress the dampers so tightly.

I use the thick shim without the thin one.

I don't use the spark plug braided wire, its more hassle than its worth in my opinion and I haven't had any noise issues with a PCM radio is about 3 years time of flying. I think it was probably intended for those people who insisted to run gassers with FM not PCM radios.

With Hanson motors, he trues the crank to 1/2 thousands or better. You'll end up with very little runout this way. Seat the fan at 8 different positions (align with each fan blade) and check the runout, tighten on the position that gives the least.

Enjoy!

Thanks for all your help. I am sure I'll have more as I get farther into the build.
