e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Lipo Storage In A Car

Greetings all-

I am about to be the proud owner of a T-REX 500 and several lipo packs. I would like to know how to keep them safe in a car when we go out for a day.

I frequently go to the field with my wife and after I fly, we hit the mall, or dinner, or a movie, or all of the above. I never worried about it with my Raptor 90, but I know lipos pose a different risk.

How can I safely store my lipo packs while I am out for a day? I considered buying a small cooler and putting a refrigerated (not frozen) freezer gel pack in the cooler with the lipos to keep them cool. Is this a good idea?

I can't be the only person who has had to store their lipos in a car for a day during the summer. Please post how you guys do it safely.

Thanks,

Jason

I often fly all day and have sometimes 20 LiPo packs in the van. Sometimes THREE 15S 9600mAh packs. (A lot of energy).

I sparked a 6S pack today because the leads touched and the negative was not properly insulated. It melted most of the gold connecter and burnt me quite nicely.

I'm not sure where they come from but at work we have these little rubber covers that fit the battery connectors, completely insulating them.

I would not worry about your batteries AFTER you have flown them.
A discharged battery (with no energy) has no fire potential.

Over discharging a cell in-flight at a high Amp rate is another story. (I havn't done that yet)!

The temps in your car can get pretty high. I never leave them in my car. IF you were to fully charge a lipo to 12.6 (3s) in your basement at say 65 degrees, then put it in your car say 120 degrees, the density of the cells change and you get voltage fluctuation. You have the potential of raising the 12.6 to say 12.8.

In theory though. I have not tested this. I have been told this by several flyers though.

Hot Cars

Cars get hot indeed, which is why I came up with the idea to put them in a cooler with a refrigerated cold pack.

However, let me expand on my request. What about at the field? If it is 80+ degrees out and the sun is shining brightly, where is a safe place for the lipos?? I plan on getting a case for my entire 500 (one of the nice molded ones) and they are kinda reflective but I am sure the temps in those cases are not well below the ambient temp outside. I am sure keeping them inside a container of some sort is better than leaving them in the sun, but what's the best (SAFEST) option?

Is this even a big deal?

Thanks for your replies.

Temps in car can reach well over 140F...ouch.

I use an ammo box. I keep two 6S plus three 3S. I dont place in trunk out of sight just in case and also keep out of direct sunlight. I also leave my windows a tad open for heat venting...this is florida after all.

A cooler is a great idea for when leaving in car while doing whatever else for long periods of time. However, I would only do so IF batts already inside an ammo box as coolers are nothing but a double plastic wall with foam that will not only melt nicely but give out some sweet toxic fumes.

Ammo box can be had for about $4 at any army-navy surplus or fleamarkets

male end of connector on batt side?

FWIW...I use "liquid electrical tape" prior to heat shrink tubing...acts as a back up for those pesty tubing that might slide out of place for not having either the right size of difficult areas such as those deans.

Putting it in a emptied out silver aluminum tx case keeps it at the ambient temp without elevating it above ambient temp like colored cases if you keep it outside. Do not use the darker colored tx case though.

Keep the case in the shade (under the car, table and such).
