| I've never heard of the gyro being "supposed" to be mounted under the canopy on the N9 - the Revision 0.0 manual (dated July 2006) has it mounted in the back, on the mount.
Under the canopy is a common place to put a gyro, as it solves a few problems - long wire runs (signal degradation), having to route the wire around the geartrain safely, and keeping the gyro in the canopy where it will remain relatively "clean" of exhaust oil. I've mounted the gyro under the canopy on my Sceadu, and it seems to work well enough.
One thing I remember is that distance from the engine can matter - the frames usually dampen some of the vibrations from the engine.
The rear mount suggested in the manual is quite far from the engine. The radio tray is much closer.
Does it play that big a role on the N9? I don't have the equipment to test objectively, so you may have to experiment.
