I was hoping to get some cheaper blade options from Align with the release of the 700 but unfortunately it looks like their blades will cost more than our current selections

Well in my experience, typically with a performance part like blades, you will get what you pay for. It is a 90 ship after all.

I think after Align's troubles with the 600 blades they are not
taking any more chances.

Make a premium blade and charge the appropriate price.

Going by your statement, does that mean these will be better than the current 90 size blades offered since they are more expensive?

I know it is a 90 That doesn't mean I still don't want cheaper options if they work.

Back a 01' and for a few years, you could get good quality 700mm cabon blades for $80 or less (Gamma) I don't think they are made anymore. I guess the current cheapest carbon blades you can get are MAH's, for $80 for 690's, its not bad and I haven't seen or heard any freaky failures with them.

Key word: "typically." Why get hung up on buying Align blades and their prices? Buy what ever brand you like at what ever price you like.

Divot's response is right on.

I'm sure Align doesn't want to be known as the company whose blades fall apart mid-air, so I'll echo divot's comments. With a larger (and heavier) blade, the forces involved go up a great deal (it's not linear). As a result, what worked fine for 600 mm can fail catastrophically at the 700mm range.

I think you also have to take into account "startup costs" for a new blade size.

Typically, it'll cost more to manufacture the first "new" design of any model - and then as experience in manufacturing that model grows, the cost will go down as yields go up.

Sure, a manufacturer can amortize the cost over the model's lifespan, but not all manufacturer's choose to take that path. Gazing into the future has lead to some famous missteps, so many prefer to always profit from the blade, and let the cost fluctuate, instead of losing money at first, and making up for it when production is in "full swing"

Either way - sticking to a particular manufacturer (for anything - helis, cars, electronics) is a good way to get yourself gouged. You don't get points for being a loyal customer, no discount, nothing. So shop around.

I am the last guy to get hung up on brand loyalty. Ask anybody I fly with, I definately like a lot of variety I already have sets of 690/710 SABs, Vs, Radix and Rotortechs for my other 90s... I was just curious about the Align blade options since in the past their blades have been a few dollars cheaper than the competition.

There's a couple possibilities:
1.) Align isn't currently able to make the blades for less money than the competition, so they have to charge more than the competition to make a profit on the blades.
2.) There is a vocal set of Align customers which suffer from blind brand loyalty - behavior that lets a company jack its prices up. Charging a slightly higher price tends to reinforce the perception of quality to these customers, as it has the "prestige" brand + a higher price. Therefore it must be quality.

Extreme examples of #2 ("prestige brands" ) are found in things like Mont Blanc pens. There are Mont Blanc pens which cost about $700, but are made from materials costing no more than $30.

Hopefully, Align fits under #1.
