This is some great info. So how much are they and where can I get one?

I just got one today at ircha and its great! my 8717's are know on 8 volts, well my fasst rx, governor, and gyro are on 5.

Its also smaller then the arizona

I just got one for my 700N that I'm building also. I'll be running a 9ch Spectrum Rx and 8717's on cyclic and an 8v switchglow.

Does anyone know how I could use the Kiwi to configure that? I'm thinking for the 4 kiwi ports:

3 for 8717's on 8v
1 for Rx on 5v

Then I'd need to make a Y adapter to "rob" 8v from one of the spare 8v ports, but pass the signal wire through to the SwitchGlo.

Anyone know if that should work okay or not?

It is not as complex as you are thinking.

Plug the 3 x 8717's + the switchglow into the '8V' ports on the Kiwi.

Plug the '5V' ports (using supplied jumpers) into the Rx (aileron, elevator, collective + Aux for switchglow).

Thats it.

Nothing else to do.

Go fly.

As the Spektrum Rx is 8V compatible, you could also do things another way to run the Rx on 8V if you wish (this is what I do).

Plug the 8V devices into the Rx (8717's x3 + switchglow).

Plug your '5V' devices into the Kiwi's '5V' ports (throttle servo + gov aux, Rudder + gyro gain).

Plug the '8V' ports (using supplied jumpers) into the corresponding Rx channels (throttle servo + gov aux, Rudder + gyro gain).

All done.

That makes a lot of sense. I thought I'd be needing one of the ports to power the Rx, but forgot that you can power it through the servo channels just as easily, so no need for a 5th port (duh).

The alternative makes sense too. Seems like it doesn't matter which way to go then (Rx using 5v or 8v)?

Thanks!

Yep, can be run either way. If your Rx is 8V compatible (like Spektrum) and you run it on direct 8V then it puts the regulator out of the picture (in terms of possible power fades to the Rx). However the regulator is obviously fine, and the system works 100% either way.

Wow, hadn't considered that either. Great point and that has convinced me to run the Rx on 8v!

Thanks again for the insights

I'm liking this solution.

Andrew....do you need to check the load some other way between flights?
I see I couldn't use my 8 ball.

Also I have 9155's and don't have HV servo's yet. Can I run 8 volts to the receiver to avoid brown out's (JR 2.4) but 5 volts to everything else till I get HV servo's? Otherwise I am limiting myself to 5 volts however that would be regulated so a brownout should not be possible. I like the sound of 6.5 to 7 odd volts to it however. I run the arizona at 5.95 volts to the three cyclics.

Pity to have to drop that to 5 volts but I see big advantages of the kiwi regulator and the Ironcorps solution.

Will there be an update to provide say 6 volts to 3 sources and 5 volts to the throttle and tail? That way people without HV's or intending to get HV's could get more voltage to their receivers and not have to go with 5 volts to the cyclics. This almost makes it an arizona I guess with the advantage of high voltage to the RX.

Sigh....guess I might have to pick up some 8717's.

The A123 type cells are I guess 'difficult' to check under load as they retain their voltage so well. My suggestion is charge before you fly, aim to only use 50% pack capacity, and swap or charge at the field. Simply noting how much was used from the pack after one flight will give some starting point.

As you say the Arizona covers the option if you dont wish to run raw voltage to your 9155's. To have a Arizona type reg also distributing raw voltage to the Rx becomes a big cabling mess as then everything needs to be jumpered through the regulator. So no, no plan for this.

The Arizona certainly will provide adequate supply to the Rx to avoid brown-outs.

The kiwis 5V reg is not suitable to use for 'all servos + rx' - it is (over) rated and designed for gyro/tail + throttle/gov +/- Rx.

I dont really think there is anything special voltage wise regarding the 8717's - it just so happens to be these servos people are using with HV setups. Of course, the 8717's are great servos!

Many of the giant scale guys are running 2S A123 voltage direct to all servos with apparently no problems. The voltage is so close to 6V regulated anyway.
