of a loose tail belt?
What effect does it have on handling?
I can see it being dodgy if it was slipping, but I only mean loose.. not falling off.

Mine is loose... looser than it should be. I can softly push on it until it touches the other side. Is that to loose? Manual says it should only go 3/4 of the way. But what is the bad effect if it's looser than that?

Ill handling effects?
Sloppy tail response?

????

I'll probably tighten it when I'm done flying tonight, but that means re-adjusting the tail (again).

You might not notice anything in hovers or slow FF, but as you get faster, more force is exerted on all of the tail works. Any potential of belt slippage will be amplified.

For example, I was flying the King not that long ago at a softball field. I was doing some fast backwards and lateral/sideways runs.
The tail was holding fine in small piros and slow '8's, but it blew out big time when I put the screws to it.

The heli will have a tendency to weathervane in FF - the tail will turn to follow the nose, and you will lose some tail control due to slippage. this will also wear down the teeth in the belt and gears, and lead to more slippage...

Keep the belt tight enough to not slip if you hold the mains and turn the tail rotor with just-less-than-moderate force. If it slips no matter how tight it is, something's worn down.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you...

Ive heard that it should slip with some force. That wat if you get a t/r strike it wont break anything. Dont know if its true but its just what ive heard. Lets get Doug or the proffesors opinion.

Dont wait for me. Ill get there when i get there

I run my belts so that they will slip but I make sure it takes quite a bit of force to cause the slippage. Running them tight puts alot of drag on the drivetrain.

Thanks guys.

I came in from flying early anyway. There was a pretty good breeze blowing out there.
Of course now that I'm in, it stopped...

I tightened up the belt. Probably wasn't loose enough to hurt anything, but I tightened it anyway, because it was looser than what the manual said it should be.

I found what Shizack said to be my experience as well. Too loose you can get away with it in a hover BUT If you goose it or make a sharp turn BAD things can happen VERY BAD

Thanks Guys!

I tightened it.
The chances of me doing anything radical in the small spaces that I'm flying it are pretty slim. MAYBE a quick panic move to avoid the evil red car, but other than that, It's taking all my focus just trying to get the $**&#^ thing to stay in one spot! (she loves to wander around...). Spot hovering is just vague dream at this point.

I'm also coming to the realization that as long as I'm flying where I am, the ONLY thing I'll ever do is hover. There's just no room for anything else. I'll soon be packing it up and heading for some more open spaces. A little bit of FF would be a welcome change. Maybe mix some circuits with the hovering. Orientation, while in motion, is not an issue for me (fixed wing training). It's when it's hovering that I get messed up.. So some simple circuits, or even some figure 8's would be a nice change up from the constant hovering. I don't care if I'm the hover king or not, I just want to fly around. I think I need to do both kinds of practice. I need to get past the terror of making a turn, and for that, I need space.
