HIROBO Freya - Sceadu - Shuttle > Brand new clutch grabbing at idle

Evo 50, OS 50 Hyper

My clutch was starting to grab at idle, so I replaced it with a brand new one. First start on it and the new clutch is also grabbing at idle Everything else is the same. The liner is worn a bit, so I can't imagine that the new clutch would grab it at idle in its first spin. Are there any other reasons this would happen? Everything was spinning fine when installed. DTI'd the shaft and it's perfect. Engine runs very smoothly - I also just replaced the bearings and they're a dream. Any ideas? I guess I really have to drop the engine again, but I'm resisting a bit. Maybe the clutch just needs to be run in?

Typically you want to replace the liner when replacing an expanded clutch. This prevents the new clutch from opening too much and developing a permanent expanded state.

Another possibility is that your fan hub might be unscrewing from the crankshaft. This causes the clutch to press against the bell and initially gives a "grabbing" symptom. Eventually it jams when the pressure against the frame gets too high.

Okay, I only took one short flight, so I'll replace the liner and check the alignment with the frame. Hopefully I haven't stressed the new clutch in one flight. I hadn't thought of replacing the liner, too.

The fan should be tight - I crank it down as much as possible. Do you use threadlocker here? I haven't been - I've only ever used it on the prop nut.

I don't use threadlock on the hub, just the nut. I posted that just as a possibility.

Okay, I feel a little stupid

I have two clutch bells - my original one plus one a friend gave me after selling his Evo. Some time ago, I took the one I wasn't using and turned the old liner out and installed a new one, just as an exercise to see if I could do it sufficiently. I used an old clutch with one layer of electricians' tape around it as a spacer to install the new liner. It came out well and I put it aside. For some reason (I didn't think anything of it) I installed that clutch bell, with the new liner, when I put in the new clutch. So, I'm thinking that it just needs to get worn it a bit. Is it possible that I just got lucky? Not... We'll find out this weekend, I hope.

Quite possible. I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as it starts and idles without grabbing then you're fine. It usually takes a few spool-ups until a new liner wears in.

I have found when you crash the heli with your idel up on and the liner is wearing away the clutch will spin so fast that the diamiter of the clutch shoes grows and does not go back to its original shape due to the heat spring steel will do funny things when heat is applyed
let the liner wear in first before you condem it

The first step in gettin help is admitting you have a problem ( yes I am addicted to helicopters )
