Gasser Model RC Helicopters > Problem with Hanson engine on my Spectra-G

I bought a used Spectra-G with a Hanson 23CC engine with Walbro 643 carb. Kit is from end last year, engine probably too. When spooling up the engine is revving up and down.

I used a brand new insulator and I tried to richen the needle settings, but nothing changed. Yesterday during last try, the motor started ok, but when I replaced the heli by hand (with autorotation on) and during the movement the engine suddenly started to rev up. I had to kill the engine by blocking the air intake, otherwise the clutch would have been fried. I checked if the carb or damper had been loosened, but everything was still fixed tightly.

Does anybody have an idea what is the matter? Is maybe the carb not OK? I have a new 644 lying around and could do another try with the new carb.

Your carb can be tight, but that doesn't mean your not sucking air..If you are using a stock insulator on the carb, you need to get a Z-RC insulator..

Just in case, try the other carb first..If it still doing it, then change the insulator...The z-R/C takes care of that end of it...
If you still get the reving up and down, then you need to change the bearings, or rear seal due to sucking air...

Agreed, replace it with an aluminum insulator. Also, there is one out there by ADA (I think that's the name), most places sell both brands, and the Z-rc is around $10 more money. Buy the cheaper one, it works exactly the same. I have both.

New carb did the trick

Hi,

Thanks for the tips. I changed the carb and tested it today. The "hunting" problem seems to be fixed now!

However I now have a problem that the tail is not holding. It is drifting very slowly in hover. I use the GY611 with the 9256 servo. How can I fix this problem: softer pad for the sensor, higher gain ....

i found at a certain rpm vibes from the engine would affect the gyro and make it drift.try to increase the rpm a bit it worked for me.if it still drifts try thicker gyro pads.

On the display next to the gain value should be an "A" or "N" - which do you have displayed? - if it's an "N" it's in normal/rate mode. Once you have the gyro setup you'll want to switch this to run in "A" mode which is heading hold. Also you'll want to ensure it's initializing in "A" mode.

Hi jschenck,

Thanks for the link. I start always in heading hold. I am familiar with the 611 and have several heli's equiped with it. I know that you have to wait for the gyro to initialize. Last week I was to quick with another heli and the result was that the heli made a pirouette when taking of.

I think it is the vibration. I read that a velcro around the sensor could help. I will try this and otherwise use a thicker foam pad.

I mounted my 601 sensor on Zeal gel, works great for me.

Hi jschenck,

No offense made. Sometimes people forget to look at the obvious (it happens even to me ). So it can't harm to point at it.

I am thinking about trying the Zeal. I read a lot about it. I can't find any shop in Europe who sells it. Yesterday I saw that it was available again at Ronlund. I like global shopping .

Hi,

I ordered the Zeal and used it on the GY611. It seems to work, however there was a strong wind during testing so I have to do some extra testing.

Are you guys using one or two layers of the Zeal tape? I have yet to install mine but just wondering how most are using the tape.

Thanks!

Have you ever seen Zeal tape? If you used 2 layers your gyro would end up about an inch off the mounting surface. I can't think of any instance where anyone would want 2 layers.

Nick,
Yes, I have some Zeal tape but not in front of me at the moment. If I remember correctly, it's about 1/4" thick. To my knowledge, there's only one thickness available.

My bad though... I meant to say "strips". The instructions mention using 2 strips to mount the gyro. Just wondering if most are cutting one "pad" or using 2 strips to mount their gyros.

Also, some guys have reported that the stuff melts in the sun but then someone said there was a bad batch out there at one time. Maybe I'll put a small amount in the sun and let it set to see how it goes.

Thanks!

OH, ok, that makes more sense. I just cut a square of it and stick it on. The bad batch that melted was years ago. My Spectra sat out in the sun without the canopy on for about 3 hours yesterday in 90deg heat and the Zeal didn't melt, and the receiver in my 100cc Edge is also mounted with Zeal, it's been out on the flightline for 8 hours in the middle of summer without the Zeal melting, and it's been in there for years.

Good to hear that. Funny how everyone's experiences with the stuff varies. But then again, that's true with just about anything.

Thanks!

I used two strips to mount the sensor on. It seems to hold now.
