Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > header tank on a falcon

I am having problems with keeping a consistant mixure. It looks as if I am getting alot of churning of fuel in the main tank and would like to mount a header tank. If anyone has done this where did you mount it. Any pics would be great. jjoos99@yahoo.com
Thanks

I use the rear screw that hold the metal frame to the plastic frame, you need to use a sligtly longer screw tho,, see the rear screw that I have the wire hold down on,,

sorry, that's my only photo for now..

Would this location work out ok? I didnt know if it would be too high in relation to the main tank and carb.
Thanks

I thought that the "rule of thumb" was to try and keep it as in line with the outlet of the main tank.

Although that is where I have mine on my Raven...

My falcon is different then the hawk that is in the picture so I cant mount it that way. Would it be better to mount it low and in front. Looks as if i could use one of the screws that holds the servo tray to the frame and have the fuel nipples pointing back to the tank.

if I am not mistaken, I think you are supposed to mount it at least as high as the carb.

Don't play around with header tanks, add a CSM Carb Smart.
You won't regret it.

If you are getting churning fuel, there's a good chance the low speed need is probably too lean, or you are getting vibrations.

When I had these symptoms, I switched to a uniflow set-up (basically just add a second clunk line), and it gave me a more consistant fuel flow. That was before the carbsmart, so that could be a good option for you as well.

As far as the header mounting, you could put it on the last frame bolt in the back with no issues. I had it there for a long time and never had any problems. Another option is the fuel magnet or os bubbless clunk if you don't want to mess with headers...

NO SOUP FOR YOU!!

My preferred location is where Blade Master as his.

This insures the center of the sub-tank is close to the same, as that of the main tank and also keeps the c.g. a little more forward (a plus on the Raven)

Yes, if you are experiencing fuel foaming, most times it is because the idle needle (which has as much effect on the hover as the main needle)is set too lean. It is more sensitive then the main needle so screw it out in 1/16 to 1/8 increments.

Thanks a bunch for all of the replies. I will have to play with my low end needle. I flew this heli for several years without any problems at all then one day out of the blue it died on me about 20 ft up. After repairing, it has never been dependable with anything more then low to the ground hover. It has been a frustrating battle.
Thanks

engine dies

How do you guys set your low end needle? I am still having the dying problem. While at idle it seems to have a miss. I can take the throttle up and it will get to the point of lifting off and sometimes out of the blue it will just quit. I richened the idle screw and it got worst. I leaned it out and finally got it to finish out a tank. I refueled and hovered again for a couple of minutes, landed and let run on idle up for a minute or so and went into a hover again and it just quit again. Any suggestions would be great.
thanks

Sounds like your rear bearing is coming apart. As it does so,the small bits from it will kill the glow plug. If you contineue to fly it a big bit will come loose and lodge somewher inside the engine and cause a catastrophic failure.

Catching it early may only mean a bearing replacement.

I had an issue at the beginning when I was running my engine rich at the beginning to break it in. After three flights the engine was idling perfectly and was choking on spool up, Rich or lean made no difference. Found my problem after tearing down the carburetor and removing the muffler to access it. During muffler reinstallation I found the problem.

Reason: Oil was accumulating in the muffler and I guest was blocking exhausts port on spool up.

Solution: Lean the engine a litle bit and tilt the muffler between flights to remove excess oil .

You may want to check this.
It contained 3-4 teaspoons of thick oil.

I have just recently replaced the ring and ran a light hone in the cyl. Bearings looked good. Skybolt I did notice that whey I had it running on the last flight while carrying it to the hover area that the exhaust was spitting oil out the muffler onto my leg. Will the low end needle cause any of these problems?

As blade master and old fart mentioned, that location would be best for consistent runs but I located mine like this.

The reason was that when the main tank goes empty the header tank will cause the engine to go rich and you will hear the difference and know to land soon. Also I like to go a little rich before I land to cool the engine and lube it a little for putting it up for the evening.

If it doesn't fly sell it!

Dilbeck,

True re: going richer when the maintank empties - UNLESS you are inverted at the time. Then it will go leaner...maybe lean enough to die....if you already have the needles set to max lean for good running.
