No, I actually like my helis set very quick and twitchy. I got the Tempest because it's all metal, has a ton of tuning options, and was only $60 more. I probably would have been happier with the flight characteristics of the Extreme head, but I'll be putting a Vbar on this and the metal head is a better way to go for that.

I think so too. This is going to be my everyday heli, so I'm going to swap the Vbar from my 600n to it once I've got it tuned in and flying well.

Back from the movies

Absolutely SWEET! I'm so pleased to read that everything is going excellent for you. I say this to alot of people (parts fit perfectly, etc) and its great to hear it coming from someone else so people don't think I'm making it up.

I'm also glad I recently cleared up the cost thing off the Minair site being retail that nobody actually pays. I think that was holding alot of people up against the Spectra but now that its known that price is pretty comparable and quality is top notch, I think its going to be alot more desirable. With nitro prices being a pain in the behind even without a price hike, and the mess and field equipment that comes along with nitro helis, I'm sure his will become your #1 machine Nick!

Not entirely sure I'd go with the flybarless thing, but, if you really want to do that then go for it. I've flown someone else's v-bar and it never felt "better" to me than a standard flybar, but then again its a complicated setup and maybe he didn't tweak the numbers just right. It takes a laptop at the field and several flights and plug ins to the laptop for adjustments to fine tune the thing.

pgkevet: I know you mentioned it was hard to assemble the bearing parts into the grips. I just helped a local guy here build his tempest head on the Spectra. The proper way is to assemble everything on the head axle first and lock tite it. Then the metal grips are hard to push on over everything...until...you take a heat gun and warm them up some then they slip on like butter effortlessly. I know you're already by this step but to anyone else assembling the head remember to use a heat gun and your assembly will go much smoother!

Keep up the good work Nick!!

I was going by the manual..no way to know what effect heat would have had on the blade coating etc and spares delays here to experiment.. that and my unlucky start with that flybar... having to sand it down..(in fact going to have to pull it - only did half and might have to come out the other way)

My way is a slow plod with frequent breaks due to a stuffed low back and a need to understand why it's done that way at every stage.. My flying 'skills' ain't going to catch an error.. gotta be perfect from the outset - double/triple check.

You must be getting that from my posts - it isn't me being difficult.. just a need to be clear and certain about stuff

And mine were easy to assemble. They didn't just fall on, I had to put some force into pushing them on, but they certainly weren't anything difficult. Pgkevet, your thread has certainly helped me, it gave me a heads up on things like the front canopy mounts.

Raja, you need to fly a Vbar that has been set up well. It is so stable, while being incredibly fast, and there's a large power increase as well. I think it's going to be great on the Spectra.

pleased for ya.. as you know I had to take it all apart and tap them into the grips individually.. and that wasn't easy either. No way to easily squeeze them in with a clamp or vice unless you carve out a grip holder.

I'm still pending rx,regulator and muffler and dubro.. but not really an issue - got preddie to work with and then a couple of weeks of very long working hours...

You'll be in the air before me..enjoy! There's no argument that the power train is a better design.

I'm just giving you feedback. Personally, I like to know the various ways things can go together and think its interesting to compare notes.

I was busy today, so not much done, got the right frame on, the clutch mounted, and the fan on the engine. God I HATE putting fans on. I worked ont he damn thing for about 3 hours, and could never get it better than .004. Finally about 10 mintues ago I said I was giving it one last try, and jsut gave the fan a random twist and tightened the bolt down again, and it was magically at .0015. Damn I hate that part of any build.

Nick,, Did you by chance check the crank runout before you put the clutch on,, I always do, Just to know, I make a mark on the top of the crank so I can see the High side of the crank, then I make a mark random on the fan, When I mount it and take the first reading, I write it down, the move the fan, and see if it got better or worse, compair the two marks, then I readjust the fan, and I'm usually getting close on the third move,,, I guess I'm lucky when I do this part, as It only takes me about 20 to 30 minutes to get it less than a thousands,,, But what you have there is good to go,,,

It's ridiculous that I had to go bring a CD to Staples to have the manual printed and spiral bound for a kit I just paid $1140 for.

Here is my home made manual. Using a high quality three ring binder and I printed the pages on my printer. No cost savings, but the advantage is being able to insert other info in tabbed dividers, such as my own drawings on wiring and servo info. I also keep a tabbed area for invoice information on what I have bought.

Because of the size, I never have trouble locating it.

That's what I generally do, but I don't like building from those, the binder takes up too much room on my bench. A nice spiral bound manual can sit flat with the pages tucked under, and with the Spectra having the diagrams in a separate manual, I can keep both open to where I need them.

By the way guys

Bill Chancey is making Spectra-g canopies himself and he can make some more if you guys want them. The last canopy paint job he gave me was his own reproduction of a Spectra-g canopy, so if someone wants to get one painted he can supply the canopy as well.

Just finished it up, and if it stops raining, I'll do the maiden today. I can't begin to describe how much I like this heli, it's just awesome. Everything was easy to put together, it all moves smoothly, it's just perfect. I'll get a couple pics of it later. It's just so beautiful, I think we'll be seeing my Predator in the classifieds soon.
