e-BEAM Beam E4 > BEAM setup

Hi everyone,

This is my first message here So hello to everyone. Some may know me on others rc forums with the same surname.

I got a TREX SEv2 stock / gorilla gear paddles / chinese weight mod and I got myself lately a BEAM to get some personal feedback on this nice heli.

I'm not a top notch flyer, but I can do some stuff inverted.

I'm running :
- a stock beam kit
- Radix 325
- Scorpion HK 8 V2
- 35X
- 3S 2200 25 Kongs Power Lipos.
- GY401

and ... a 14T pinion.

The servos are Ino Lab Digis : HG-D202HB for cyclic & HG-D261HB for rudder.

I just maidened it and the rudder seems weird. The gyro is well configured... But that's a weird feeling, seems like the rudder servo is not fast enough ... weird... really weird to explain. Let's say it's not rock solid as my 450SE

I suspect that with the 14T pinion I'm getting too much head RPM.. causing this... Maybe I should go to 13T or get a 9650....

Anyone has some advices to get this stuff solved?

Thanks a lot,

Much appreciated,

Cédric

I run with a 13t pinion and that motor.

thanks for the reply.

I don't trust that much theses INO LAB servos.

I would put 65MGs all the way with 9650 or 9257

But money ...

Do you have any special servo mount for the 9257 ?

Beam Setup

I am setting up my Beam and using 65MGs and have a question. Which servo arm are you all using? Are you using the large single arm? I am assuming I can use the second servo arm hole, I get around 13mm to the ball link. Ialso have 9257 on the tail

Hi Cedric !

I am running mine with the same motor as yours but I went down to 12T pignon. I use a S9650 in the rudder and it is really almost two times faster in pirouetes than my T-450.

What are your flight times with the 12 and 13t pinions withe the 8 motor?
Thanks,

Go with the 12 tooth, or even 11.

I was running a 13t pinion with the same setup. My batts and motor were getting very hot, so I switched to an 11t. I think 14T might be too much.

I had to switch from a 13 down to 11 also, works great though.

I ask Lucien over at Scorpion motors about motors for the Beam E4. Here's what he said:

Carl Petersen,

For good sport flying and 3D, the Scorpion HK-2221-8 motor with a 45 amp ESC is a great combination. Using a 12 tooth pinion you can get good performance with decent battery life. Head speeds of around 3000 RPM will be obtained with this set-up. A good 20C 3-cell 2200mah Li-Po battery, such as our X-Caliber line would complete the power package.

If you want a bit more punch for 3D flying, switching to a 13 tooth pinion will bring the head speed up to around 3250 RPM.

If you are looking for higher levels of power, then the HK-2221-6 motor with a 55 amp ESC is the way to go. Start with a 10 tooth pinion for a head speed of 3100 RPM. An 11 tooth pinion will get you around 3400 RPM. If your head and blades are up to it, a 12 tooth pinion will get you close to 3700 RPM. For this motor, you will need to use either a 3-cell 20C 2500mah pack, or a 25C 2200mah pack.

If you really want to push the power envelope, you can go to a 4-cell set-up with the HK-2221-10 motor. This combination can get you in excess of 600 watts of power in extreme maneuvers, and will give as much power as any 450 class helicopter can take. With the higher voltage the motor draws less current, and gives similar headspeeds to the -6 set-up, but you can get 30% longer flight times due to the larger battery capacity of the 4th cell.

For me, the HK-2221-8 set-up is plenty of power, so that is a great place to start.

Hope that helps!

Lucien

My Beam runs a little hot on a 12 tooth, so I am sticking with the 11 tooth setup.

I switched from an 11t to a 12t pinion. I'm not sure I like it. It seems to bog a bit. That could be because my batteries are getting old. I may switch back to the 11t.

What ESC, battery, and throttle curve?

That setup with 10t would be okay if you're just flying around doing circuits. It'll draw less amps go easier on your packs. Your would probably get 5mins out of your pack safely running a flat 100% TC.

However, if you're into 3D most would get a 13t pinion for the -8 motor.

Or you could gor for a 12t pinion for a compromise between headspeed/punch and flight time.

Im using the 12t myself.

That's pretty small. If your headspeed is too low and/or dips even lower due to manuvers that load the disc, you may experience some vibration or wobble and the tail may let go. Just watch for it.

This is a solid heli. It should be quite stable with the recommended 11-13t pinion. What are you looking to accomplish by dropping to a 10t pinion?

If it's more power you want, oddly, you might not get it through regearing. E-heli motors produce more power by drawing higher amp loads - to a point. It's kind of opposite of the way a gas powered auto works. A larger pinion is more likely to net you more power because it will pull more amps through the ESC.

You should really choose your targetted headspeed and match that with your motor (kv), pinion, and a 90-95% throttle curve. Slightly less than 100% will allow headroom in the ESC to compensate for disc loading in governor mode. Too much less and the ESC becomes less efficient.

Good luck!

Mmm... Heli is complicated...

I'll try 10-12 Pinion... I just order that pinion... hopefully I'll find best pinion my shelf.

Thank's
