e-Mikado Logo 400 500 600 > Alternate canopy ideas for the 500/600

Just wanted to pass this along to people who hate paying a fortune for canopies. I was fiddling with an E-sky Esmart fiberglass canopy the other day and I noticed that it fits really, really well on the 500/600 frames. the grommet holes line up and the included canopy clip fits over the front landing gear snugly. You have to trim a wee bit from the underside to clear the screws where the front landing bow mounts but otherwise it's nearly perfect. You will also need to set the front bow to the forward (600) position for the best fit.

Check it out:

The quality of the canopy is surprisingly good, even if the colors are kinda bland. Best of all it's ony 22 bucks!

thanks! i might fly with this and display the heli with the stock fg canopy. i had a rough crash the other day. with the exception of the canopy the crash cost was actually reasonable. too bad the fg canopy will set me back ~$100.

edit: never mind. just realized you specified that it was an fg canopy from your first post.

Yeah, it's a painted/cleared fiberglass canopy for only 22 bucks. Really nice quality too, I was sure suprised. I tried to fit it on my CF Logo 10 and 14 but it didn't fit very well at all, too many contours in the underside of the nose interfering with the battery tray.

One thing I've never liked about Mikado canopies is their wrap around design in the back. You have to be very careful when taking the canopy on and off and I've really tried to be gentle, but eventually they all seem to split the seams or develop flex points.

Hi Jon...is this a heavy canopy relative to the stock fg? I suppose they're all pretty light but it seems like Mikado has really stretched the limits of light with their stock ones. Tom

I'll take it into work tomorrow, we have a balance and I'll weigh it. Just from the heft it's fairly light. I don't have an intact FG Mikado to compare it to unfortunately, but hey, I'll never need to buy one again anyways!

Pretty interesting...thanks. My first 500 canopy exploded into quarter sized pieces of neon yellow, black, and orange when I hit the ground inverted and pirouetting---one of my signature moves. While I don't think any canopy would survive, I was impressed with the number of tiny pieces.

I have no idea why you would strap that on there, each to their own, stock looks way better.

Surprisingly, since I think the stock canopy *looks* nice, I've had more people comment how "cheesy" *they* think the canopy looks. Regardless, the idea of a bit more durable canopy is interesting since they take some knocks now and again. I hope RappyTappy gets his mold working soon, but this is a good idea too.

Just weighed it; the canopy comes in at 85g without the clip.

Hi JRVander,

That's interesting. My FG Logo 500 3D canopy weighed 65 grams "naked" and now weighs 96 grams with a base and clearcoat on it. At 85 grams, your canopy is right in the ball park.

I love the looks of my Logo 500 canopy (see my gallery), but thanks for providing another solution to those of us who cringe at the $85 price tag for a white canopy with unfinished seams.

Keep 'em flying.

I agree. I think the logo canopy looks better too with the the matching contours and all, this one looks a bit square-ish. I just put it out there for exactly the reason you mentioned. I think alot of people would rather spend the difference on other crash parts, especially if you crash alot. I guess you could equate it to a Vespa - fun to ride around on, but you wouldn't want your friends to see you on it!

Out of curiousity I looked on the vendor's site just now; seems alot of people want a cheap beater canopy - they're nearly sold out.

i picked up one off of ebay. at $30 shipped couldn't hurt to try. for sure not as nice to look at than the stock canopies. but now i won't have to fly so conservative in fear of stock canopy crash costs. here are the places i was able to locate the e-sky canopies:

Are there any other canopies that will fit the logos? This one isn't bad but it seems if this one will fit others might as well or are the Logos oddly shaped or something.
