Blades, Night Flying and Painting > how do you know when blades are bad

I did a stupid thing over the weekend, i was running the engine after pumping fuel out to burn the last out of the lines (as i always do) It was taking a long time though, so i thought i'd take it out of throttle hold and spin the engine up just enough to run through it a bit faster, which was't a bad idea as i do it occasionally. here comes the dumb part. i was in stunt mode. the blades made 1/2 rotation, hit my field box and by that time i had throttle hold back on. one blade looks fine, it probably didnt' hit anything, the other has a small chip in the leading edge. They are airborn models 600's. relatively cheap. i'd like to keep using them but am kind of afraid too. Is there a decent way to stress test blades to see if they are still in decent shape? When i bend/twist them they seem about the same as they used to be, but its hard to tell for sure. any ideas?

My blade mCX can outfly your Aurora!! (in a 1' x 1' x 1' box) :)

Decide case by case- post a picture of the damage. If its nearish the blade tip (not the root) as it sounds like it is, then proabaly not going to cause a structural problem at all. The blades are generally not very highly stressed the further out from the root you go. You might be able to use a little CA to help keep the chip from growing into a crack, or filler if it makes you feel better too.

I am not familiar with those blades- wood, fiberglass, or carbon? Doesn't really change the answer much.

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

Rebalance them and take a VERY VERY close look to see if there is any other collateral damage. Only very small chips are acceptable to glue over. Don't forget that blades are supposed to be expendable hardware. If you have to ask chances are they should be trashed.

Typically if the broken area is loose, to where you think you could fix it with glue, then I'd say clean the blade and hang it on your wall as a souvenir. If there is any damage near the root, without question retire the blade.
