Gasser Model RC Helicopters > GY611 Not Holding in HH

Guys I know there have been multiple topics on this and I've done my searches but I need help on this one. On my Spectra I've set my 611 up in normal mode and it holds rock solid. However as soon as I switch over to HH the tail starts to go to the right. It's not a slow drift but it's not as if the tail is reversed either. It's just a constant turn. I went into the hidden menu and reset the gyro thinking that might do it but got the same result. I've played around with moving the wires around and still the same thing. It is a brand new gyro so I wouldn't think there should be any problems with it If anyone has any advise on something else I could try, I am all ears. I am using a spektrum system with a 5200mah lithium pack from Fromeco along with their Arizona regulator. I know there was some talk about other people have similar issues with this same setup. Again just looking for something else I could try before having to pay the $15 for Futaba to tell me that everything checks out once I send it in.

I'm having the same problem with my 600N. Two different gyros still doing it. Must be a certain vibe causing it. I'm going to try Zeal next.

Let me know how it works out. At this point I am willing to try anything.

Silly question, is your Gyro sensor secured?

Post your settings, for example;

Did you set your limits?
Are you in 3D mode?

Is your the Amp (Gyro Control Box) showing N in Normal and a filled box in HH?

I ask because it sounds as if your controls are set up in reverse, when in Normal mode if your trim isn't right you will get that gradual turn, but once in HH the tail Locks in place.

Everytime I've seen this it's because of one of these two issues - trim or subtrim in the radio. Not saying this is the problem you are seeing, just what I've seen - specifically with Futaba gyro's

For most radio's I've used this is different for each flight mode so you need to check the trim and subtrim on each flight mode and make sure they are both zero.

If you are drifting in rate mode you *must* adjust the mechanical linkage from the servo to the tail control to take the drift out. absolutely no adjustment on the radio.

Now you can use the trim to get a steady hover, land - take note where the tail pitch slider is at - zero the trim back out and adjust the linkage until the pitch slider is back to steady.

You'll never have it perfect in rate mode as the trim adjustment will change with headspeed.

get it close, flip to HH (AVCS) and fly.

The other, simple answer - you *must* turn on the heli with the radio set so the gyro will be in HH mode during initialization. That is, if you have it set so it's in "Normal" mode in "Normal" flight mode and HH/AVCS in Idle-up - then you must turn on the heli with the idle-up switch in idle-up.

** BE CERTAIN ** to switch back to normal mode before starting the engine!!

Bottom line, you must initialize the gyro in AVCS/HH mode.

Try the zeal tape as I mentioned at MHA

It can only make things better.

Hey rbort, How's it going? I got the engine running like a champ now. It's just a matter of getting the gyro locked in and then I'm good to go. I've just ordered some Zeal so that should be in in a couple of days.
As far as starting in HH mode, that has always been the case. I did notice however that my gyro was in 3D mode in the Amp so I wanted to give F3C a try and see if that helps. According to the directions it suppose to make the gyro stop unlike the 3D mode which allows for a little drift.
When I initialize the helicopter I believe the Amp read an "A" for HH. Once I flip the switch, it changes to "N" so I know that I am in HH mode. Once I get the Zeal I will give it another shot.
Thanks again for all of your help at MHA rbort. I appreciate it. My heli sure sounds nice and looks good in flight (other than this drift)

Hey Ironside

You're mostly welcome! I enjoyed meeting you and working on your heli for you . I plan to be at the Delaware funfly, not too far from you so hope to see you then and burn some fuel together!

fyi - The 'N' means you are in normal mode, not HH/AVCS, not sure if you just mis-typed that but sounds like that's what happened. You'll have to let us know how you sort this out. I do have zeal tape under the sensor for my 601.

It just came out wrong. I meant I could tell the difference between HH and Normal. Thanks clearing that up.

Well I finally figured it out. All I did was to try strapping the gyro down with velcro and now it holds true now. I guess it was just moving around too much. Anyways for anyone else that may be having a similar problem I hope this helps. I also think the vibrations will settle down a little since I am going to start leaning it out a little since I am on my last gallon of fuel during the break-in period.

Cool!

Did you also remember to move that top servo from outside the frames to inside the frames so the pushrod is a straight shot back?

Fixed mine by setting subtrims and trim to zero then setting hover mechanically in gyro normal mode.

good! - I know this process works well with Futaba gyro's. This is different than my JR 500 gyro's which require subtrim.

Yeah rbort I put the servo to the inside. Everything is running great. Also since I changed the fuel tank to a 16oz I can easily get 30 minutes of flight time - its great. By far the best purchase I've made since I've been in this hobby. I love me Spectra G. Thanks to rbort and everyone that has helped me out in the past. I appreciate it.
