Let me tell you a story about how I suck at painting.
I had everything planned: I sanded my canopy and fins down with 400 and 600 wetsand, 2 nice coats of adhession promoter, then 2 coats of sandable primer, and sanded, then two great coats of black plastikote spray can. I did all the same with the tail fins. First big screw up, on the windshield, using a heat gun to up the speed of the process, one of the edges shrinks a littlle and crinckles a little. Not that big of a problem, sanded at a little repainted, doesn't look that bad. Im planning on using this flourescent spray paint, I guess it must be for spraying your lawn to mark it or something, cause it goes on like crap. Well my plan was to make some checkers. I put tape on everything, draw the checkers in, cut them out wiht a razor blade, cutting little squares of paint out. The paint is pealing everywhere I am cutting. I figured at first it was because I didn't let it dry long enough, so stupid me tries it on the tail fin. I painted two different sets of tail and rudder fins. Now I completely ruined this one pair and had to resand and reprime and repaint. Right now I am at the point where I'm waiting for the crappy flouro paint to dry on the canopy before I take the tape off and access the damage. I guess this won't be a perfect canopy.

I have made most of the painting mistakes I think I can make. Here is what I settled on:

I clean the canopy and sand it good and wipe off with alcohol.

I spray on 1 coat of adhession promoter as specified on the can. So i spray it, wait a few minutes and then spray the first coat of paint. I forgot about the primer because all I can find is gray and it screws up the color of the paint.

The first coat of paint needs about 10-15 minutes to get tacky then you can spray another coat. Use mist coats but when you are ready for final coat then spray it a little heavier just enough so it looks wet. Thats on the can, they seem to know what they are talking about.

If you want to add another color, I think you'll find it easier to shoot the first color with one coat of clear. Plastikote clear will do okay. Now when you mask it off and add your other color you should be able to easily remove the tape without pealing up the other color. Don't try to cut and remove the paint you already added, you need to paint over what you dont want.

I think the most important thing about painting is take your time and read the labels. I don't like plastikote clear for final clear coat. You need to spray on a lot of coats to get it fuel proof and it still gets tacky. Might be worth going to the auto paint shop and getting them to shoot it. My paint job, which is very basic, took about an hour a day for four days. Its only one color flouresent yellow. The real paint guys seem to be in the scale forum. I learn a lot of tricks there.

Oh i forgot to add, if you use spray can clear then use a very fine sandpaper on the surface first. If the surface looks dull after sanding, don't worry because the clear coat will bring it right back up.

What I settled on

I am about done with painting. It didn't come out as bad as I thought. When I taped off the stab fine and cut it up the paint came off that time, but I left the canopy dry longer and when I took the bandages off, hardly anything came off. A little touchup and it was fine. As for the windshield, still a little warped, so is the canopy now ( the hair dryer gave it a little tight fit on the heli) and I noticed some black dripped on it and I had to resand it and I ran out of grey, so I bought some blue, trimmed off areas of grey strips that look like the frame of an apache window or something with blue in the middle.

Ill try to get a pic up soon so you guys can get a laugh, the colors realyl look kinda funny, but its ok. Man I give you guys credit that can really paint some amazing canopies.

The biggest problem is the Plastic coat paint. Goes on like plastic and comes off like plastic. I use 99 cent paint from walmart. Works great and stays on when you pull the tape off. I have screwed around with paint alot and learned the hard way.
