Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Hawk Pro fuel tank vent

Sunday, the fuel tank vent in my Hawk broke for the second time. Have any of you had a similar problem?

I'm wondering if it's becuase of too long a piece of tubing, vibration and metal fatigue.

This time, I installed as close to the plug as I could get it so I'll see how this works out. I also annealed the tube before and after bending it.

Are you meaning the brass tube or the fuel line?

That brass tubing is very, very soft. So you will have to gently bend it to conform to your needs. Some hobby stores sell ministure tube bending tools. That can help eliminate your problem of breakage.

I have had mine rot away a few times. I went to the LHS and picked up some thicker walled tubing and havnt had a problem since. For some reason thier copper tubing they supply just wont hold up.

I used a tubing bender both previous times. This go I did use heavier tubing. "Rotting way" was a good way to describe it. Glad I'm not the only one!

One a happier note, that Hawk is one sweet flying machine! I did my first high spedd circuits with it a couple weeks ago and my first loops last Sunday. It looks so good ripping through the sky!

Yes, The Hawk PRO is a very decent heli for learning and for some introduction into 3D'ing.

you could use a beer bottle neck to make the bends

no probs with tubing yet

I read in the, I think in the Helimax Kenetic 50 manual, that you should slide some fuel tubing over the entire tube. So when I rebuilt my Hawk Pro recently, that's what I did and it was really tight going on too.

Note sure if it will help, but it might and maybe that's what we were supposed to do to begin with. This may prevent the tube from degrading and cracking.

You can also replace the brass tubing with some aluminum tubing instead. last time the stock one went out, i just went to the lhs here and got aluminum instead and havent had a probelm with it as of yet and its been a while...

I use a pressure fitting (the type used on the muffler) in the top of the tank, and put a bolt into the hole left by the vent tubing. This works well, and eliminates the need for the vent tubing to pass from one side of the frame to the other!

That is exactly what I was thinking about doing! If the new tubing breaks again, that's the next step.

This winter, the plan is to do a complete teardown and upgrade prior to slipping it into a scale fuselage. I want to install the lager tank as one of the up grades and I will do that vent mod. Did you use JB weld to secure the pressure tap?

When installing the fitting, make sure to put some Goop on the threads. This will ensure a tight seal on the fitting. I currently have the 500cc fuel tank in my hawk, and have threaded the finning in at an angle to reduce the disruption of the fuel (Bubbling). This seems to work exceptionally well!

Mike what did you use to plug the second hole up in the front grommet? Since they have two holes in the rubber grommet one will have to be sealed.

you can use a 4mm screw to plug the hole. I put some Goop onto the threads of the screw and screw the bolt in BEFORE tightening up the retaining screw. You may have to slightly enlarge the cap and retaining plate hole to accommodate the 4mm screw.

You can also use the tank plug from the older hawk tank, since it only has one hole in the rubber stopper.

Another alternative is to use a SHORT piece of tubing and flatten one end and roll a fold into the flattened tubing end. This will create a gas tight fit for the hole, just make sure that the rolled portion is inside of the tank.

Goop is not affected by the fuel, unlike JB Weld, which breaks down chemically from the alcohol in the fuel.

When putting the pressure fitting into the tank, make the hold a little small, and slightly taper the hole with an xacto knife. Then, thread the fitting into the hold, making threads in the plastic. This will ensure a gas-tight fitting.
