Aerial Photography and Video > PowerJazz program card issue

I had one of the first powerjazzes around, and it died on me. After about 10 perfect flights, it just wouldn't initialize. Kontronik sent me a brand new one...

Rhett... I can't fly, luckily the HC Profi Can!

so many posts about bad ESC's. Makes me appreciate the reliability of my gas birds and reconsider my upcoming electric purchase. Any one not have issues with their ESC?

*raises hand*

only issue I ever had with an ESC was because of my poor soldering skills when I first started off...

Knock on CF but I haven't had any problems with the PowerJazz. It has worked flawless and still lovin' the cool temps. I'd recommend it anytime.

I've never dealt with Kontronic support but from what I've heard it's pretty decent.

I also have the Schulze "pop-tart". It's not bad but I'd rather get a PowerJazz over the Schulze.

Schulze support is decent. Replies and repairs are timely.

Manuals for both are weak.

PJ runs cooler than the Schulze.

More options for configuring the PJ.

Cost? I'd get a PJ.

I was pretty excited when I bench tested the slow spool up last night when it did work. But it's dead. I've tried everything. I'm pretty sure of that.

Kind of disappointing, but with so many good things being said about them, I'm confident a replacement or repair will see this thing working well eventually.

I like the beefy nature of the thing, and the simplicity. It doesn't look as fragile as a Castle Creations ESC.

Derek

I read somewhere if the RX battery is not compatible then it will also not arm.

What battery are you using for the RX?

I used a 2S 3600 Lipo for setup.

For flight I use a UBEC. So I connect straight from the flight packs.

You won't be disappointed with the PJ once you get it going. I flew hard today and I couldn't believe the 23°C (73°F) external temp. Freaky little thing...

I'm using a 2s-2400mah battery.

All this discussion doesn't explain why it worked, and now it doesn't. Something is wrong with the ESC or programming card. Or I'm a total idiot (likely).

It worked, then it didn't. I changed nothing.

I'm currently building another T700. When it comes time to incorporate the PJ, I'll try it again on that bird.

Derek, i know how frustrating this is, been there, done that

There IS a possibility that the card have short circuited for some reason, its just a simple unprotected print card, so things can happen.

Did you get the card with the red rubber covered all over the front, or the one without?

Well, like noobs said, once you get it working its very nice, and chances of going in to a thermal shut down are almost impossible

THR trim and hover throttle knob (if you have one) all the way down? The prog card may have recorded extremely low values to the ESC that will not let the jazz arm, but are low enough for the Castle to arm.

Chris, that doesn't matter, it should power up (program card) disregarding of any settings in the system...

Am i mixing up something here? is it the program card or the ESC that wont power up?

The program card now only comes on (all lights) then shuts down.
The ESC will not arm or run the motor either.

At first go, everything worked (slow spool up, etc). Then I turned everything off, and wanted to recheck one last time to make sure I had everything set appropriately. I reconnected the program card, and now the card doesn't work, nor does the ESC.

I had a problem with my Jazz once that sounds MUCH like what you are describing. I determined that it was either that the throttle setting was too high or low when I connected the battery. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. I'd see if it's just in your setup of the transmitter throttle settings. I know, sounds weird...

I have it 0% to 100% linear. 100% on ATV throttle channel.

My prog card did that as well. IIRC, I had to plug/unplug the prog card or battery and then it would work. It is really sensitive to the hook up sequence.

Don't give up, it's all worth it when it's in the air.

Check your subtrim too and verify the values in the transmitter monitor.

Just hooked mine up.

1)ESC main power to 6s pack
2)ESC servo wire to prog card
3)4.8v flat pack to prog card power

Then there must be something wrong, and im thinking its the ESC, cause you should get to power up the ESC disregarding of how the program card had set it up or not, so my guess would be a faulty ESC, even if its rare...

You can also do it the old fashion way, take a watt meter and check the output from esc to engine, and from esc to throttle, to see if theres any power at all, thats the last thing i can think if now
