Avant Aurora - EFX - FX > Starter one-way bearing bad on first flight.

Flew for the first time on saturday. Just a couple of break in runs. The problem is the one-way in the clutch for the starter shaft locked up on the first start up. I tried to free it with out pulling the engine with no luck.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi Ken,

From our experience that can happen if the clutch stack is not aligned with the engine or no oil is added to the one-way bearing right before installation.

At the bottom of page 8 in the manual it explains that the clutch stack bearing blocks should be left untightened until the engine is in place:

Quote
"Install the assembly on the left frame using the supplied M3x8 screws to bolt the two bearing blocks. Don’t tighten them now wait until the engine is installed to let the starter shaft fit in the clutch first."

There is a note on page 18 of the manual that says:

Quote
"Add a few drops of oil to the rollers to lubricate the one-way bearing...."

On page 19 in the manual it says how to align and set the stack:

Quote
"Now that the engine is in place rotate the starter shaft and make sure it’s aligned with the one-way bearing. Tighten the eight bearing block screws accordingly."

If your one-way seized we'll send you a new one. Simply tap it out of the clutch and tap the new one in place and then you can repeat the alignment process as per the manual. Just PM me your info on the AvantRC site.

I lubed it with triflow. I even pulled engine to recheck my fan and starter shaft alinement after pulling engine to mod the engine mount for the YS SR. I actually think it was installed in the wrong direction. It just spun for a second or two before it turned the motor over.
