Audacity Models Pantera 50 - Tiger 50 > Keeping canopy grommets on the canopy, how?

Okay, searched the archives. Maybe I missed it, but I couldn't find any tricks to keeping the grommets on the canopy instead of staying on the pegs. I've greased the pegs, thought a few runs of exhaust would help, they still pop off fairly regularly. I can't seem to support them better with my fingers when removing the canopy. Am I missing a trick? I'm off for a quick setup check on the new project, (ditching work again) and 'pop' goes the grommet as I start a once over before loading the car. grrrrrr. Do I just need to slather the pegs with grease? Send them to be Teflon coated? leave the grommets on the pegs all the time? I didn't bother with CA, it's not going to stick to the canopy and it'll stiffen up the grommets.

If you can, get the JR grommetts, they are the best I've used. After putting them on the canopy, put the flexible Poly ZAP ca on them. Lift the edges of the grommetts and let the CA get under them. They last quite a long time this way. Also, make sure you don't cut the hole in the canopy too large.

The Audacity grommets are awefully stiff. You can use about anyone elses grommets and they'll be softer and stay with the canopy much easier. As someone else mentioned, dont cut those holes too big and if you insist on using the stock grommets, glue them in, lube the pins with vasoline and be gentle.

Yeow, maybe I should rewrite my post! I didn't realize how much inuendo one could read into the conversation but as I reread what I wrote, it could be taken completely out of context.

I used to wipe my spit/saliva onto the pins before fitting the canopy each time. Hardly ever runs out and nobody else will remove your canopy

I now use a bit of silicon grease on the pins every now and then.

I use KY jelly but that has a tendency to dry up after a while.....

Some good ideas, thanks all.

really, we're missing some mention of safety before lube, but maybe that's just implied.

I have to add, oil and grease is bad for rubber, makes it swell. I should have remembered that, but I didn't. Petroleum jelly should be the best. I've never had to cut a hole in a canopy yet, they've all been there already, so I didn't cut too big! I'll look to some softer grommets in the future.

thanks again

Petroleum jelly should be the best

If the product is petrolium based (as the name implies) it would not be a good choice if the grommets are rubber...... they will swell given time......

Better to use a non-petrolium product such as silicone grease....

vasoline = petroleum jelly = dead dinos

yup, not just a cute name. http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=424
I get so focused on certain points, like vasoline is the lube of choice for aquarium filters, due to it being very neutral for the water chemistry, and I read another post recommending it for grommets, I miss the TOTALLY OBVIOUS "petroleum jelly" that I, myself, wrote. Sheesh, when am I going to grow up and think before I speak(type). Juan gets the 'keen sense of the obvious' award for pointing it out.

well, it may make them swell, but it will soften them too!

time to go play with my toys....

I don't recall where I learned about it, but smearing a fillet of Zap-A-Dap-A-Goo or Shoe-Goo around the outer perimeter of the grommet on the inside of the canopy really helps keep the grommet attached. A little lube on the pins helps too. When the grommets are attached this way, they stay on the canopy and last longer too. I've found that the white Raptor grommets outlast ordinary black rubber ones.
