Main Discussion > Thumb to Pinch - how long?

I started out thumbing and flew planks for 20 years that way. I got a heli about 5 years ago and found that my thumbs alone didn't have the precision needed to fly a heli. Now after getting very comfortable with helis doing mild 3D, I'm wishing I have forced myself to learn the precision needed. While pinching, I don't have the flexibility and reach to get to the corners very easy. I don't notice it on helis as much as I do my 3D profiles. I'm actually working my way back to thumbs on the planes. once I get fully comfortable on them, then maybe I'll make the change on helis.

I think a neck strap makes all the difference especially properly adjusted for ergonomics

You should adjust the neck strap length so the radio hangs level with:
  • Arms relaxed straight down at your sides
  • Elbows bent 90°
  • Wrists straight
  • Palms flat against the sides of the radio
  • Pinky fingers comfortably under the radio
  • Ring fingers comfortably at the top switches
  • Middle fingers comfortably at the face switches
  • Thumbs and index fingers comfortably on the sticks

I flip the switches one way with one finger and the other way with another finger - Top switches I engage with my ring fingers and disengage with my middle fingers - Face switches I engage with my middle fingers and disengage with my index fingers

Yup, I have and I said so above as well. Lukas also has his pitch stick reversed which just seems odd to me. I have flown 3 SIM sessions now with pinch and it is feeling more natural all the time. I think it will help ME personally, though it may not help everyone. Interesting to note though that 90% plus of the Pro's I know of fly pinch.

There's a lot of these threads and seems they tend to offend a lot of thumbers who jump in with a lot of clammering trying to defend thumbing and derail those wanting to convert to pinch - But here's something that speaks much louder than all the clammering in the world IMO:

No thread exists about pinchers wanting to convert to thumbs
You never hear a pincher say he wishes he were a thumber

hey jase just practice on the old girls....ummmm....can't be said here. If it doesn't help it sure would be fun however.
I'm trying to go nipple grip on the sim too. Then I go back to thumbs.

how about nipple grip slip.

I'll keep trying to convert. I find it better on the sim but I'd like to try a tray as well.

Wingman77: Not a single one of those threads asks how long, that's why I posted my thread. I knew the thumb vs. pinch debate was all over RR, what wasn't was how long the switch should take.

well jase it took me about a year of trying to change from 16 years of mode 1 to mode 2. 3 separeate goes and then I tried on the sim for 3 months and hammered it. Can't fly for $hit now on mode 1.

The old nipple grip should be easy compared to that. The only thing I found out was due to my right thumb being a little stiff (maybe carpal tunnel or something...man I hate getting older) I find it uncomfortable to hold the tx and then nipple grip. I cannot get the range of movement that I need. So I think I'll try a tray as the neck strap doesn't help with that.

Jason, it took me about six months of serious effort before I comfortably made the transition from thumbs to pinch. Now that I'm used to it (and greatly prefer it) I could never go back. I tried, actually, just a week or so ago and was amazed at the difference. So much smoother and more precise with the pinch. Keep it up- it's worth the effort and initial frustration.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, it's getting easier day by day. It IS more precise for sure, if for no other reason than it restricts the range of movement somewhat. The true test will be flying live that way. Kevin's bringing me a neck strap this weekend so that will be my first go that way.

Yaa it's not that bad...YOU CAN DOOOO IIIIT! Hehehe

Still switching myself, needs to be said. Been at it for about a year now and I can now fly my F3C machines completely pinch. I was having a horrible time with the hovering flying only thumbs. When I 3D however I still find myself switching on occasion to only thumbs for some stuff but I jippo it you see? Fly still with your thumb like said earlier on in the thread on top of the stick and just guide with your other finger, if you need to juggle the sticks and accuracy is not the end of the world just move your forefinger out the way slightly and get it back in afterwards. I sometimes find I do this without thinking about it while doing piroflips for instance.

I don't pressure it and have realised on a few occasions now that I never stopped pinching even through the most chaotic stuff. Especially doing a piro flip down low...hate those dreaded thumb slips when the pucker factor is scary high.

For me it took one month to get use to the pinching grip. (after 6 months flying).
to get more comfortable, I have built a device to hold the remote. (watch my gallery for pictures).

You don't mess with the ofir...
