e-Minicopter Joker > Changing an MJ2 into a Joker 2

Hi Guys,

I want to go to 710 blades and shorten the boom and was wondering if someone has done this and what parts I would need?

Do I just need to order a Joker 2 boom and Belt with the 710s, up the headspeed and away I go or do I also need to change out pinions etc?

Thanks!

David

710's seemed to cut it pretty close from what I could tell on my fathers Joker and my Acrobat. As I recall it is boom, belt, pushrod, and most likely a change in gearing. If your looking to do 3d I suggest 690's.

Thanks for the reply. I just want to try a different head speed to see how it effects handling and vibration. But still plan on using it for AP.

Also, I am running the 32-4 on 10 cell. any suggestion in motor pinion?

Thanks!

the tail drive pinion is different.

You need:

New Boom
New Blades
New Main pinion ( I am running a 16T on a 32-4 on 12s for reference) I would guess if you are at around 80% on your ESC you will need to size up around 2 teeth since you are looking at a roughly 20% increase in headspeed.

I would leave the tail drive pinion how it is, it will have plenty of authority at the higher headspeeds even geared down a bit more then stock.

Shorter tail control rod (or just cut yours down now)
shorter boom supports (optional)

I will need:
1 foo shield
1 valium to calm myself after your 45 degree kiwiflipping takeoff

I was thinking of doing the same thing. It sure would be easier to carry the smaller machine around. If I use the Minicopter AP gear, I can get the gross weight down to 17.6 lbs with A123's and a camera. Is this light enough for the shorter blades?

Also, any recommendation on a new pinion for the big blue Pletti with the shorter blades & tail?

Thanks Tabb, Great reply!

Any suggestions on blades? I was thinking of the Rotortech or Radix but both of them are 3D blades and was wondering if since they are lighter they wouldn't really cut it for AP??

I am running 14/14 gearing for the tail with 110s, I think you are familiar with this setup , do you think I should just leave the 110s on and change to 14/16??

Cheers!

David i have a set of custom vblade 720's if you are interested in them. i was using them with good success on my joker 2, i swapped them out the new SAB710's as the SAB's are my real preferred blade.

as for the conversion real easy infact. Tabb couldn't have said it better.

you could try the 14/14 gearing with your 110s at around 1650 and see how it goes. I have run this in the past and it worked fine. If the tail is too wild you could gear it down a bit but I dont think it will be.

I have some 700 gamma blades that I used to fly on my CX that work great if you need some.

Also I have a set of Radix on it now and those also work really nicely and have a low amp draw.

You could also look at the Rotortech FAI blades (Scott Gray edition). I had considered them for my machine. Should be good for AP. The FAI guys swear by them. Very good hovering stability.

I think your weight is a bit heavy for the disc size though. Fingers crossed you don't ever need to auto.

Thanks for all your help. I am ready to order the parts needed but have a question about the main pinion. I am currently running a 17 tooth at 68% throttle for a 1380 headspeed. To get 1650 on 710s and above 70% throttle what pinion do you think I would need? That said I can only find a 18t pinion so I don't have a whole lot of options

Thanks again!
