Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Torque Tube failure - How many??

Earlier this week, I had just finished re-building one of my Hawk PROs and was getting ready to lift off when I noticed the tail blades sort of lagging. I immediately shut the heli down and upon checking further, noticed the tail spinning freely. Upon disassembling the tail rotor and checking the torque tube, I found that the dog end of the TT had gotten loose.

I read on some of the other post that several other flyers had experience this dilemna. Long story short, I reglued it and "pinned" the end onto the tube.

Has this incident been brought to Century's attention? I would think that this would be a cause of concern and should be rectified before a catostrophic incident occurrs.

Change

Hey Ray,
Thats new. I pulled my tail to look and my dog boen end was pinned stock. I am not sure if this is somthing new. having a pin in the dogbone sure gives me a warm fuzzy. I know after removing the Pin from my old hawk you had to torch it to break the glue or locking compound they use to remove the dogbone. Once hot like that it drops right off. But like I said the one in it is pinned as were my originals I took apart.

The older replacement was just a few dollar tube. You re-installed the dogbone on it and the other side you know is set by a collar. Now the full unit with pre installed dogbone is just as cheap.

Good catch ray !

Well this might have been an earlier production because it was not pinned on. Unlike my other TT drives, this was a fluke (I guess).

I know now it won't be coming out for sure

I had a boom strike at the end of a bad auto over 150 flights ago. I replaced the TT with a fiberglass arrow I got at Wal-Mart. I used 2 hour epoxy only to attach the dog bones. I would not pin the shaft to the dog bone, makes it too hard to get out later.

Living in the state of fear, are you Ray? No need to. When or if the TT comes loose just auto it down. You do practice autorotations don’t you?

No, not living in a state of fear, rather, just wanting to make certain that no injuries occur, either to myself or others on the field with me.

Oh yes........I've been doing autos for the longest time and LOVE THEM!!

I lost the tail twice do to failure of the torque tube. This has happened on my Hawk Pro and a friends. Im not sure what caused this but since, I put a pin in it like Century does on the Predator. Id still like to no why these parts failed or why Century wont pin the end like they do on the Predator.

Believe it or not, it deals with cost. Even though we might think it'll only cost half a cent to do, it probably equates to alot of money the company would have to fork out. And eventually be passed on to the consumer.

I would gladly pay extra for a kit that didn't have issues

my first kit of a Hawk pro had missing grub screws that held the pins for tail gears, Thats a nice trick to play on a newbie,
who'd have thought
then the counter gear bearings cutting the shaft, another nice trick

I had more mechanical failures than pilot errors crash my heli

to date I have have crashed 4 times due to mechanical failures

Thank god for RR or I would have given up Century altogether

I decided to check my torque tubes tonight since I was installing a cnc tail both my spare and the one I was using didn't have any pins

So I drilled em and pinned em

Any more surprises that we should be made aware of ?

I am sure no heli is infallible but at least make the corrections that the customers are complaining about

I think that is the only real issue with this kit.

Since I have no more pins from old Predator t-tubes where can I get pins suitable for pinning the Hawk Pro T-tube?

That hapened to me too. Forced my first auto. Anyway, i am pretty sure i cut a piece of wire pushrod the specific length and then hammered it in to the whole I drilled. Held fine.

there are a few differant ways to do it
here are a couple of easy ways
using a self tapping screw from my 450 kit I used a drill bit slightly smaller and tapped 2 screws 180* from each other about 3/16 in from where the tube goes into the dogbone.

or if you have a drillpress you could use just about any thick wire and epoxy it in place and file it down nice and smooth
