Main Discussion > Crazy Compression! - TT36 Raptor 30 Engine

After hours of trying to get the Thunder Tiger 36H engine to start last week in my Raptor 30, I finally got to break in the engine with 2 tanks. I tried to start it up again today. Got it started up after several times, but the compression is just ENORMUS! I know compression is a good thing, but it is so difficult to start that my hand starter gets so hot to the point that I have to put it down for a few minutes because it starts burning my hand. I know the compression will wear down after time, but it's to the point where I almost, on some occassions, can't even get the thing to start! Anyone have any similar experiences? Thanks.

Loosen the plug a little and start it then tighten it after a gallon or so it will "free" up

TO HOT !! it's good engine when you get one !!! it kicks ass for power!! but give it time !!! let it cool down after ever flite, lean it out till it starts to drop power in the hight end !!! it will take a good 10 tanks to get it lose, but you don't what to burn out the rings to soon..so don't get it to rich where the engine is getting hot !!! ( HOT NO GOOD ) you be going out in a fue week to buy a os if you don't watch it
have fun and keep cool

Thanks, James, but your context of rich and lean is backwards.

Just curiouse. Are you sure it is not hydro locking on you? I will usually leave the fuel line cliped off on my engines until I am ready to start up. After un-clipping the line, I install the glow ignitor and turn the engine a couple of times with my hand and the starter want just to make sure it isn't loaded up before I give it a spin. Haven't had any problems doing this. But then again I use OS. I can say though that I have seen some TT engines Hydro lock so bad that when the heli was turned on end with the tail down, fuel ran out of the muffler. Just a thought.

Is it a ringed engine or an ABC? If it's a ABC your just feeling the taper at the top of the sleeve which is normal. Remove the plug and turn it over. Is ther still restriction at top dead center?

Yes, one of my TT36H is very tight too. Even after about 20+ tanks of fuel throught it and still it is not ran in yet. It has locked up on me twice (not hydrolic lock either) once so badly that I had to strip the engine down, just to free it up.

It definetly is not hydro lock. Just very, very tight compression.

is this a new engine? if its USED, someone may have taken the shim out of the head! Im not sure if the TT has one, but most engines do, if its is removed, the engine will have more compression. but I dont think these motors are designed to run on super high compression.

It's a brand new engine. They gave me an additional shim in the box as well if I wanted to use a fuel in excess of 15% nitro - then the compression would dammage the engine.

put the shim in and use Cool Power 15% or 30%. get the 30% HELI blend.

Dude... Save your time. Get an OS if you really want to fly.
What a wonderful feeling when you go to the flying field, start your engine then fly, refuel it then fly again and again.....
Ohhhh what a feeling...
By the time you read this, you already wasted your time, money and only got frustration

break it in on a stand with a prop

break it in on a stand with a prop and use a heat gun to warm up the cylinder before you attempt to start it. Breaking in an engine on the machine is a mistake on a plane or a heli. About the only place it is appropriate is on a car, where a prop is not really an option. This also gives you a chance to get the needles close without much fuss.

I agree with JT. Use a break-in stand every time.
