I have a Heli-Max Ase CP basically stock. I've been thinking about what sets my heli apart from the higher end ones and one of the things I don't understand and can't seem to get an answer is about the gyros. I know that these are essential for helis, but I was under the understanding that the Axe CP came with one built in.

So, why are people adding Futaba gy240's and gy401's to their Axe CP's? Does this mean that they have two gyros now? Or are they just getting one that is much better?

Also, what other gyro's can I use in my Axe CP that isn't as expensive as the gy240?

They are just using better gyros.

The Axe CP probably only has a 'Rate' Gyro. Where the GY 240 etc are 'Heading Hold' Gyros.

A Rate gyro will compensate for large changes in torque, but the tail will still move round when you fly through turns, or catch a gust of wind.

A Heading Hold (or Lock) Gyro should never let the tail move unless you move the stick.

HH Gyros are not cheap. The Align RCE500 may be an option for you.

A correctly set-up HH Gyro makes the heli A LOT easier to fly.

Thanks for all the info. Explains a lot. I'm definitely planning on upgrading my heli soon so I wanted to get the gy401, but I don't want to have to replace the radio yet and I'm reading that I can't use the gy401 with the stock transmitter. That's correct right?

Also, do you think it's worth it to do the direct belt drive mod to my axe cp when I get the new gyro?

thanks

Watch out looking for cheaper gyros, I made that mistake. The two HH I've worked with that seems decent but cost less are the telebee and the e-flight. They seem fine for smaller electrics. I have an Axe CP, and to be honest, it's a fine heli to start learning things (not just flight skills, but systems, terms, etc)however I would suggest you consider only upgrading pieces that would apply to a new heli or just plain save the cash for something better. Look to the 450class (325mm rotor size) and think about what you could move into a machine like that. They are far more capable and stable.
micro helis have a 'fun' factor, but I feel they have the following issues:
-tail authority is directly related to the condition and voltage supplied to the tail motor. (low batter causes trim changes, HH would help here) Belt drive tail would obviously help, but absolutely requires a brushless upgrade as well, IMHO.
-so light, small breeze really affect flight
-typical brushed motors limit progression past basic flight
-brushed motors are less efficient, you loose flight time

so, you may want to save up for a great "step up" package like the blade 400 that comes with a nice radio that could take you even further. Not having a HH gyro helps build your early flying skills, in my opinion.

by the way you CAN use HH gyros on the Axe with the stock radio, you just need to be sure you can set the gain correctly with the functions. I've read threads about it, just do some searching. If I can, I'll take a look at my gy401 and Axe CP radio and see if those work. I'm still learning about my gy401!
