Progress

Don't worry, I'm still working on them. Nothing exciting to photograph however. Just tweaking the final shapes of everything. The top cowlings have been adjusted and I'm finally saticfied with their shape. The 407 has a buldge on either side at the oil cooler location, so I've added that which was overlooked originally. I'm getting ready to glass the tail booms and cowlings this week. I'll post photos of that process.

Regards,
George

Hi George,

Just caught up with your build and very interested in how you glassed up the foam stabs & fins ?

Any chance you could give a little more detail on the process ?

I'm very interested in trying a simple piece myself, just to see how easy/difficult it is - your foam & former method I can follow, but I would really apprciate how you tackle the glassing of the foam patterns

Can you oblige ??

Thanks for your consideration
Best regards

glassing

Hi sparkyman, I'd be happy to elaborate on the glassing of the foam plugs.....hope this sheds some light on the process.

I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but this works for me.

I clean the foam of all sanding dust then lay the fiberglass down and apply the epoxy resin to the cloth, saturating it well. I use a squeegee to remove excess resin and avoid runs as the resin has a somewhat thin viscosity. Once cured, I mix up another batch of epoxy resin and thicken it with talc to the consistence of peanut butter and apply it with the squeegee to fill in the weave pattern of the fiberglass. The next day I sand the surface, prime to help show any imperfections which are then filled and sanded. Repeat until the surface is absolutely smooth.

Good luck with your project.

Tail booms glassed

Hi guys,

Well I was going to glass the tail booms this week but with the approaching hurricane I decided to knock it out today.

All three have the initial layer of glass cloth and epoxy resin. Once it's cured I'll apply a thickened coat to fill in the weave.

Sorry I only took pictures after I cleaned up, too sticky to play with the camera during.

Until next time,

George

Now this is all still just the mould,or part of another step for the mould which you will use for the finished product?
It sure does look nice though.

Just wondering if you use a guide coat when finish sanding? I use guide coat powder on all block sanding to help show imperfections in Hot Rods and show cars that I do. Just wondering if you this technique when finishing your plugs?

The guys in the hangar behind ours in Melbourne who assemble Velocity full scale kits built a blended wing design. They sprayed a very hard and glossy red final finish in their molds that assisted with the release agents. I was amazed at how silky smooth those molds looked and felt. The parts always popped right out with a light tap of a rubber mallet or palm of the hand. Their technique seems the same as Georges when they built their plugs and molds, down to the same blue foam and shaped ribs.

They also vaccummed the parts after the CF and resin was laid in. It removed any air bubbles and made for an even depth all around during the curing process. The vaccuum system was very simple and combined with the matt that went between the part and vacuum bag, made beautiful parts. Too bad the CF was painted (UV kills CF)after because it was a awesome sight to see a naked and partially assembled airframe.

The beatings will continue until morale improves...

Hi Guys,

The only progress news I have is that I've been working on getting the tail booms all smoothed out. Here's a quick progress photo of where I'm at.

Rivets

Started work on some of the rivets on the 206B horizontal stab

also stuck on a nav light housing just to see what it would look like.

Tomorrow I'm finally glassing the top cowlings and if all goes well I should have the fuselages glassed by the weekend.

Until next time,
George

I probably missed it in previous post but...

Cowlings glassed

Hi guys,

The cowlings are all glassed up and I am very happy with the way they turned out.

Well.... I'm taking a break for today.

@Pistol Peter, I don't use any vacuum assistance at all, it's hand laid from start to finish.

Until next time,
George
