Tail Booms

Here a progress photo of where I'm at with shaping the tail booms for the 206B, 206L and 407. They're getting there.

George,

What material are you using to fill the seams and voids in the foam?

Thanks

plaster

It's a gypsum like plaster which sands with the same consistency and ease as the foam.

Fins

The horizontal stabilizers and end fins have started to take shape for both the 206L and 407.

I've had to go back and redesign the top fairing/cowling parts for both, I didn't like the way they turned out, hope to have them done by the end of the weekend.

Hey George, just like to say youre doing an amazing job. Been watching the thread here and over there (SHRC). I dont fly RC helis this size and where Im at, nowhere to flyem that big unless on private property. You doing what you are doing shows exactly the hard and tedious work that goes into making a body. I hope you sell you a few to help yourself out with the expences. Excellent work. If youre like me, I know youre getting alot of satisfaction out of doing it.

Farings/cowlings

Hi guys,

I got delayed with the shaping of the top fairing/cowlings for the 206L and 407, they kicked my butt. After going back and taking measurements off the real ones, I redesigned them from square one. This time I'm much happier with the results.

Also, I started work on the nose section which will be used to vacuum form the bubble shaped windshield and chin windows.

All that is left after that before glassing is fine tuning the nose of the 206L and shaping the 407. I wanted to get all the "smaller parts" finished before moving on.

Until next time............

Hi George,

Not picking holes but hopefully giving some help.

Before doing the main mould........

We would normally finish the original pattern to the point of it being ready to have the mould laid up.

Then rather than making a second pattern of the nose area, that may not be as good a match as the original. We would do a local lay up of the nose area. After this, we would do a positive moulding of this area, so that the window area could be modelled and adjusted to fit the original pattern.

Just trying to help and offer some friendly advice - looks great what you have accomplished so far and look forward to seeing your process continue.

This is only a test................

Hi Guys,

Started shaping the nose section (chin windows) as well as test fitting a windshield that I vacuum formed up real quick. This was more to get the angle of the nose as it tapers down to the sides. I plan on removing the foam windshield areas on the plugs to sand the nose angle correctly then stick them back in and fill.

Once I get the window shapes correct on this nose section jig I'll use them as my plugs for vacuum forming.....all in due time.

On the real ones, two different styles are available. Regular and quick change style. I may just make both styles as they can be easily changed depending on the subject helicopter.

George

The saddle

Hi Guys,

Just a small update today. Here's an example of my landing gear saddle plug showing the level of detail which can be expected on the fuselages also.

The idea I'm trying here is to cast plastic pieces which will be glued to the landing gear after they are welded together, effectively covering the joint.

George

Hey George - have you any intentions of marketing these fuselages or are they all just one offs ?? If your doing this as a potential commercial venture, can you put me on your pre-order list ?

Me too George. BTW, I'm due home around mid September. Hopefully I'll have the XLC by then. I bought another XLV as a parts bird and to finish the turbine conversion. The fleet is getting bigger and I can see your work sitting in the middle of it...lol. Seriously, Sparkyman has a point.

The beatings will continue until morale improves...

sparkyman and DKTek, thanks for your interest! Yes I'll be selling them, and as a Licensee, they will be sold as an "Official Licensed Bell Helicopter Product".

You're added to the list.

Castings

Hi Guys,

I was only able to cast a couple of saddles today until I ran out of resin , more is on the way.

It's looking good and once there's a coat of paint on everything it'll look that much more convincing.

Thanks guys for all your support and words of encouragement, it's much appreciated!

@ Pistol_Pete, a video would have been cool but the shop is so dusty with all the shaping and sanding the camera would not stand a chance.

@ blt4ice, I have no idea how many hours are into it so far, but it's safe to say ALOT...just ask the wife.

Until next time,
George

Smooth as glass!

Hi Guys,

I've started fiberglassing some of the parts. All the different horizontal stabilizers are finished as well as the 206L end fins. It's a time consuming process to build up the surfaces and get it smooth as glass, but that's a must in order to get a perfect part in the end. I still have the vertical stab and 407 end fins to finish up.

There are techniques used in the automobile design industry that will greatly speed up the surface finishing and mold making. I may just try these techniques on the larger pieces to see how they come out. I'll keep everyone updated when/if I do.

Until next time,
George
