206L Cowl

Hey Guys,

The 206L cowl is finished and has received it's gloss coat.
I ran out of blue which is why the rest of the plugs will be red.
It's really on there only for the gloss anyways, the color doesn't matter.

I'm putting the rivets on the 407 cowling so it'll get it's gloss hopefully by the next day or so.

A 429? You guys are killing me!

@DKTek there are only 4 429's (serial #57001,57002,54801,54802) it's still in flight testing.

Until next time,
George

George, will you hand polish that now to get a super fine shine, before you wax?

Yes, it'll get polished, same with the surface of the mold.

Been watching this thread for a while now, All I can say is WOW, Alot of work is really going into these. Alot of work has already been done and the molds arent made yet. These are going to be the best scale Rangers on the planet. Whatever the pricing is on a kit will definitely be well worth it(If you plan on selling any). Not trying to give you a big head but you got some Master craftsmanship going on there George.

Wouldn't it make you sick to own one of these and crash it.

Mold making start

Hey Guys,

Your kind words are much appreciated. I'm still overwhelmed at the interest and response I'm receiving from this build.

Well, I've started the process of making the molds. the parts are inserted exactly half way into the cut outs, clay is then pushed into the gap to prevent resin from dripping down the side. The excess clay is cleaned off resulting in a nice clean parting line. The plugs are held in place with Popsicle sticks which have been hot glued to the sides from underneath giving support and preventing the plugs from moving around while waxing and during lay-up of the glass layers.

First wax then PVA is applied to prevent the next layers from sticking and ruining your day.

Not enough time today to start laying up the glass. As they say, tomorrow is another day.

Until next time,
George

fiberglassing

Hey Guys,

I started laying up the fiberglass for the molds. After the tooling gelcoat was applied, layers of veil where individually applied. Veil is used to prevent print thru of the cloth pattern to the gelcoat. It also makes for a nice first layer void of any air bubbles. When parts are pulled there's a good chance the gelcoat would break off at the air bubble locations....bad, bad, bad.

And after the resin was applied to each of the layers this is what you are left with,... air bubble free!

This is veil, it's very fine and sort of desolves in the resin, so you put it down and leave it. No chance to re-position it.

mat goes on next so more to come........

Mat

First layers have "kicked" so one layer of mat goes on. This process will slowly continue with an end result of 6 layers to create a strong mold.

I'm back to work.

Until next time.............

What you just did, what is going to stop that from sticking to the parts?

PVA

PVA release agent was applied to the parts before the gelcoat was applied. I edited the previous entry to include that step which was missed.

Hey George great pics.I'm intersted in the "Veil" cloth. This is the first I've heard of it.What is is called if I was to look for it in a store to buy??IS "tooling gel coat" different than plain fiberglass gel coat?Where do you buy tooling gel coat?

Keep the pics coming.
Thanks

Greetings,

The material is pretty neat to work with. You can get it in Carbon Fiber too. As stated above the veil is used to prevent print thru of the fiberglass of carbon fiber cloth pattern to the gelcoat of the mold and some applications will use it in the product for the same purpose.

It can be purchased here.

[url=http://www.fibreglast.com]Fibre Glast
has all the needed materials and tools to make mold and plugs. They service many industries including BVM Jets.

Tooling Gel coat provides a hard resin surface to reproduce the plug surface. It can be purchased in Orange and Black. Some people use a white gel coat with Carbon Fiber dust added to make a CF tooling gel.

Hope this helps.

side one

I've finished the lay-ups for side one. It's now set aside and allowed to cure completely before separation. You don't want flex during separation or the gelcoat will crack so it won't hurt to let this sit a while and move onto something else in this build. I still have two tail booms to detail and paint.

Until next time,
George
