Right now, I'm doing my flying out on the street in front of my house. It's really the only place I have to fly at the moment. But it's a cul-de-sac, so there's very little traffic, and it works out well.

In the evenings, and week-ends, folks are out walking, or riding bikes with their kids. The first two questions are always:

How High will that go?
How much does one of those cost?

I had a 12 year old kid as me how much it cost! He said he was going to talk his mom into buying him one, cuz: "that's awesome!"

It really does attract a lot of attention. At first people think it's a Wall*Mart toy. When they realize it's not, THEN they want me to fly it again so they can watch.
Of course they want to stand 2' away from it so they can see it. (sigh).
I can't count how many times a kid will try to walk right up to it. I've reached the point now where as soon as I see anyone coming, I put it down. At first I thought people would demonstrate a little common sense, and keep a safe distance. But no... I just don't need some kid walking into the blades.

But I just have to chuckle every time someone comes up and starts talking. It's always those same two questions..

Then comes: Is that all you're going to do.. Hover?
"Yep".. for now.

Eventually you'll discover that you won't or shouldn't fly in that invironment, I use to in front of the house and at baseball fields. Unless you have a spotter to look out for people coming close to your flying area you can simply expect people to just pop up from nowhere. I'll fly in front of the house when there aren't people around since you can't predict when something doesn't work correctly and the heli goes out of control. At least at the field people are usually aware that anything can happen. I had a woman come out to the middle of a closed off baseball field (I closed all the gates) behind me and she yelled out "cool man, I like your flying...) Scared the crap out of me. So it is not just kids who do this.

So if you do fly on you block, I'd try to do it when the kids aren't out and make sure that you have your throttle hold/engine kill ready to go if needed.

Having my heli: Cool, Having a working heli: Awesome, Having a day to fly: PRICELESS!

you really shouldn't be flying in front of your house or in the streets,, if you ever hit someone or hit a car or truck it would be 1 more black mark against the hobby,, to many black marks and the government will get involved, we don't want that..

I don't want to be the negative person here but I just want to know if you've given a though on what the implications are if you hit, for example, a child with some extremely fast rotating blades? please think about it, it could ruin your life and a child's life too. You don't have control over who could appear and if you have a mechanical or radio failure you would't have control over the heli...
Go to the "safety" section on this forum to have an idea of what I'm talking about...

just my opinion.

Attention is exciting at first, then it gets real old. I prefer flying with my wife and kids at a vacant field where this is no bother.

Thats why I find a remote spot to fly so I dont get botherd, besides
curious people do not know to stay away from a running helicopter
and how dangerous it can be.Thats why I try to advoid those incounters.

Hang on here - just what heli is 2old flying in the street? A CX2 might tweak someone's ear a little - whereas we all know what a Trex 450 et al can do.

2old - they do say common sense ain't common any more - thanks in part to the safety police

How high?

I am not going to jump onthe band wagon!
I get the same questions over here.

I normally say "out of sight" for the height.
For speed, "I often use too fast for you just yet."
And for the cost, when asked how much does one of these things costs (which is normally from adults). I answer;
"It doesnt matter how much you still tell you wife half that amount anyway! "

I once hovered it on one pioint and said to a very inquisitive child I am going to fly full speed over there (about 100m away) and back to this spot so watch closely.
"ready......GO!!"
I then turned the heli around 90 degrees and said "look is back" Did ya want to see it again?

He was flaberghasted!

Fly safe my friend

How fast: 250MPH at the blade tips with near a ton of force pulling out at the center.

No idea how accurate that is but I seem to recall reading that about one of my raptors. The speed I believe, the ton of force I doubt. If nothing else it instantly will make an onlooker respect the force of those spinning blades on that 'nifty' toy. After telling my neighbor that, he stopped walking over to my back yard to watch it when I'd get it out lol.

(I did some googling before I hit post)

Q: How fast are the blades moving

A: Most .30 sized helicopters spin their main blades near 1600 rpm for easy flying around, and for sport loops and such closer to 1900 rpm. This calculates to over 200 mph at the blade tips and near 300 lbs of force pulling on the center of the blades. The average .30 engine produces a mean one and a half horsepower.

Link: http://www.heliguy.com/nexus/newbie.html

How high: Like others, I usually say 'further than you could see/out of sight'.

Safety: Hopefully you have good judgment and are flying it safely, I'll just assume that. I would be very nervous about flying a 450 or bigger in those kind of circumstances though. We may know what they're capable of, the general public is pretty ignorant.

The shirt is useless, if you are flying at the right place you don't need it.

Yep,and just think thats a saw blade flying around in the air and at
any given time a failure can happen. And you could hit a kid ,any person and so on and so on.And just think of the LAW SUIT that is going to happen after that(so fly safe its safer and cheeper).
