Century Hawk - Falcon - Raven - Predator > Finished the rebuild, now a vibration to hunt down!

I got my Raven out of the shop and fired it up today. About a month ago, I had a blade strike that stipped the gears out of the CCPM servos, among other problems. So, I replaced all those, got a new 401 and a 9254 for the tail (I don't do 3D so the 401 should be fine), installed a new main shaft, feathering spindle, flybar, and new blades. When I started to run the engine up, there was a noticable vibration. I rechecked my flybar paddles and my blade tracking, but that's not it. I then noticed that the vibration only happens when the power is on. When it is "coasting" there is no vibe. So, I tore it down again tonight, thinking it was the output shaft from the engine. It's not. The only other shaft in there is the one that goes from the fan to the main gear. I didn't split the frames tonight to pull that one out yet. I was hoping that someone would have a quick anwer tonight so I won't have to split them tomorrow. Please help me! I only have a little hair left on my head, and that's going fast!

Where exactly is the vibration on the heli? Is it the landing gear that you see vibrating or the tail section vibrating?

Vibe

It seems to start in the head and then resonate to the landing gear and then back to the tail.

listen to Ray, he has been in the hobby a while longer than me, I'm not to good with vibes cause I have been very lucky with my Century 30/50s,,

if it's in the head and the shafts are new, maybe the Rotor Hub is slightly bent, or 1 of the Dampeners may not be seated properly, or the Paddles are not at equal distances,,

I know you said it starts at the head, but if you reused the Tail Output Shaft or Tail Hub one of them may be bent,

maybe the Torque Tube bearing is not centered, it should be centered on the Tube not the Boom,,

you sure your Fan or Clutch Shoe is not damaged, or the clutch liner could be damaged,

I had an up and down vibe once in my boom and I found 1 of my tail blade to be heaver than the other,

I guess if you crashed really hard your Counter Shaft could be bent..

What Jim said....

That's pretty good for someone who professess not to be in that long, Jim. Hehehehe. You've pinpointed a majority of the reasons where vibration originates from.

Thanks

Thank you. I'll check all those things.

I hope I found it

I am such a stupid a$$! I balanced the blades and the head, but I never balanced them together. I pulled the blades off and now the head is out of balance. I installed some flybar weights and balanced the head again. It stays where ever I put it now. I have to go to a class, but when I get home I am going to recheck the blades and then reinstall them, rebalance the head and try her again. Hopefully that's got it. If not, I'll go down the list I go t from Jim. Thanks.

I am still a dumba$$

When I got home from the class, I put her all back together and it still vibrated. Not as bad, but still noticable. So, I watched the Finless Bob video on blade balancing. I had balanced the blades to find the cg, but I didn't take the next step and balance them as a unit. Once I did that and put them back on the head, it balanced at every point on the clock. I just test flew the heli and it is great again. My only disappointment is that the new blades are the woodies that come in the crash kit. I liked the cf ones that came on the heli. Oh, well. I guess it's better to wreck the woodies at $22 rather than the cf at $100!

I have found those woodies from the crash kit to be out of balance on more than one occasion.

If it doesn't fly sell it!

Unfort that seems to be the case with woodies sometimes. I've never even flown woodies. With RJX fibreglass blades at only $65 at one of the hobby shops in my city I'd be crazy not to. If you ever see some floating around cheap then they are definately well worth the $.

These are the composite blades that come with the Raven:

As you can see they are only $62.00.

Sweet

Those look sweet. But, they aren't the ones I had. I got my heli as an almost finished, fully upgraded kit. I guess the guy had already upgraded the blades. If I had known they were $100 blades, I would have learned to fly on the $60 blades first. Either way, thanks for the tip. I'll be ordering some of those soon.
