Dennis and JRVibe: if the engine is centered, it will feel smoother. If you have the engine tightened down a bit off center, the one way will feel very rough. I actually use this to tell when the engine is in the sweet spot, and then I tighten the engine/ mount bolts. It spins freely until I put the starter on it. Maybe some people have theirs spin freely all the time, but mine usually locks up and stays there until I remove the engine. There isn't really a need for the one way to release, the bearings on the start shaft are larger than the one way bearings and they take the spin for a long time.
If you have the clutch in hand, and the start shaft in the other, and you can't get the shaft to spin freely in the one way, then you have a one way problem. If you have it mounted in the heli, and it feels notchy, then the engine is probably mis-aligned.
