Avant Aurora - EFX - FX > Aurora Build Balancing??

Just wondering if anyone is going to the trouble of balancing fan or checking the fan and clutch with a dial indicator? And if you are what are you finding. Just wondering if I need to go to the storage for tools.

Thanks for any info.

You should not have to, but it doesn't hurt to check if you want a quality build imo.

The fan does not need to be balanced, it is fine the way it comes out of the box. ive been running mine without balancing it and it is fine.

There is no dial indicator needed because the fan hub does not use a collet. I have checked mine with a dial indicator just out of curiosity and it was less than a thou of runout.

Hi Ken,

I used to check the runout on one of my older machines - it was always 0.0008 (0.8 thou) or less.

Checked the runout a couple nights ago on a new production build - it was 0.0005 (1/2 thou) with the nut locked down tight.

Cheers,

Even if the runout was excessive on the fan hub, I don't think there is any way you could adjust it since it is threaded to the crank. I guess you could order a new fan hub.

Thanks guys. Kinda dumb question, already really knew the answer. I was kinda having a different problem. Nothing major but I was worried. Was tring to center up the starter shaft in the one way. Then I turned the engines fan and it seemed to catch the start shaft a little.

I was concerned because someone told me they went through a couple of the on way bearings in the clutch.

thanks again.

Alignment with the starter is not difficult but is critical to ensure that the one way does not get damanged.

clutch alingment-boom install-instructions

My Aurora build is almost finished. I decided to check the fan for fun....0005 in. without the nut tightened, after tightening the nut I was looking at .001 in. The plastic fan its self is very rigid, really well designed(like the rest of the heli) I just glued in my govenor magnet, and have found that on most of my heli's, balancing the fan was not needed.(except Stratus)

Clutch alingment: I actually needed to open up the aluminum engine mount slots(4) in order to allow a little more room for engine alingment. When I first installed the engine, I noticed that when turning the engine over slowly, I could see my clutch have a slight movement(side to side) I then saw that when comparing the bottom of the clutch bell, and the top of the fan hub...they were not in perfect parallel alingment. So I just used a carbide dremel tool and opened up the engine mount slots just a bit. After doing this, I was able to use the washer under the fan, and still be able to allow the clutch to move down away from the bell slightly, for some clearance.

I have not heard of anyone having any issues with there clutch alingment, but I also did this with my Avant EFX a couple yrs ago.

I have been very happy with the build, and really appreciate the time Augusto and other pilots have put into this design.

I would like to see a couple changes...the new tailboom plastic sandwich holders with the 'nipples' for alingment. This proved difficult to insert into the frames. The tail rotor bellcrank bolt sticks out past the nut plate, making it really difficult to slide these holders and boom in place, as a unit. I removed the bolt, and shorted it slightly, then I was able to slide the boom and holders in place! It doesn't appear to be easily removable. I'm going to remove the right side 'nipple' in the plastic holder, then drill a small hole in that position, then use a 3mm socket head bolt to thread into the right side holder. This should make it easier to remove the boom, and provide a secure boom install.

Also, the instructions are on version two, which is good to clarify a few areas, thanks! But it would be great to see the instructions reach a level of the Vibe 50(awesome). Include a paper manual, large detailed pics with more building notes! Some things are taken for granted with the current manual. I'm sure it will improve as time moves on. It would just be easier for new builders that don't have a lot of experience. Any other ideas??

The screw should not protrude past the nut plate. Did you install the M3 washer on the outside of the frame (Page 15 of the manual)? This will prevent the spacer from entering into the hole that the nut plate occupies.

Yes, I installed the spacer and 3mm washer. Maybe I grabbed a bolt that was 20 instead of 18mm...not a big deal, I just cut 2mm of the bolt, and it fits flush now.

Have you had any trouble installing this assy.? I installed the two plastic holders onto the boom, then pushed it into position, snapping into place. Now when I need to remove this assy., it's going to be difficult without some sort of 'prying'. I haven't seen any of the Aurora pilots using these new plastic boom holders yet, from looking at all the pics out there. I realize they hold the boom in place very well, but I would rather have the old style holders, made out of plastic!

Hey Rob(team Bob00), do you have any suggestions for installing the boom into the frames, and removing it!

My son Brandon is using the new clamps on his Aurora. This design is much better than the old clamps believe me. If you loosen the gyro mount and the the first support below the boom this gives you enough wiggle room to install the clamp.

Hi Brian,

As Uppie posted loosening things up a little is the safest way to go. Getting rid of the excess part of the t/r bellcrank screw that protrudes past the PEM nut into the clamp area also helps.

I concur as well. Looseing things up a bit does the trick.
