Hi Guys could a couple of you advise please on the tail setup for the Trex 450.
I have watched finless bobs video setup and yes its very good, however I am supprised that he has not set it up with some offset.
Doing it the way he shows has the blades stait, but all models I have come accross have had some offset usually about 8degrees.
Could someone that has set one up please advise.

Many thanks

If it's set up right, it will have offset.

Here we go again

Its because of the tail pitch slider geometry of the trex, and the fact the 401 doesn't have individual end points.

Just set the slider in the center, the servo at 90 degrees, get the most you can on the limit pot with the shortest arm you can run and let it rip in heading hold mode.

And then what happens should you have gyro problems? Switch to normal and start spinning.

Sorry but it'd always mechanically trim my tail to be still in a hover in normal mode, right or wrong. I've set my 450 up like that and the piro rate is plenty fast and consistant.

It's not even possible to trim my gyro in normal mode.

Please describe to me when you have had a gyro problem where switching to rate mode allowed you to land safely.

If the gyro goes it goes, it still controls the tail rotor servo even in rate mode.

Fact is most tail emergencies aren't GYRO related. Tail servos fail, belts break, Raptors sling tail blades (sorry Gerald I had to), none of these are solved by switching to rate mode. They can all be handled by switching to throttle hold and removing the torque from the rotor system.

BarracudaHockey,

Are you suggesting that we just dont need to set a tail offset mechanically on the bench anymore with any heli so long as you are in HH mode its going to hold the tail there.

I have always mechanically set the tail for all my other helicopters on the bench then test flown in rate mode making small mechanical adjustments then read that to the gyro by flipping a switch to set it correct for HH mode.

Am I just wasting time with this?

Thats not a waste of time. Thats the proper way to set up your tail.

Setting up a gyro in rate mode mechanically is the proper way to setup a gyro.

I setup my 401 like this to ensure its setup properly.

A 401 on a 450 with a centered pitch slider and equal throws performs great. There is no reason to complicate the setup with this combo.

Yea, you can fly it like that as I did in the past, but after I burnt out a digital tail servo, I realized the proper way to set it up is in rate mode. This helps to keep your servo from burning out.

My 9650 in my Trex has more than 1000 logged flights on it.

This way you get the maximum and most accurate holding from the gyro when flying in HH mode.

We are talking about a 450 with a 401, right?

Do you have one now? How long did you have one? What was your flying level when using this combo on a Trex 450? What moves were not holding when it was set up centered that would hold when it was set up with rate mode?

I just want to know what your comments are based on... mine are based on MY long term experience with a 450/401

I've been using a 401 for over 1-1/2 years on several 450's. Currently I'm using one on my Beam E4.

For me, since I'm no pro 3D flier, I mostly set it up in rate mode to prolong the life of my tail servo.

Ben Minor explained it to me in the past.

If it's not set up in Rate mode, you'll be flying around with the servo horn off center/ off 90* the majority of the flight.

If thats how you want to do it, what was the point in getting the servo horn at 90* in the first place?
